Strapped job
agency applies
for a grant

The North Valley Job Training Consortium (NOVA) will apply for a $2 million federal grant to develop programs that promote the supply of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workers in Silicon Valley.

NOVA, in collaboration with the San Mateo County Workforce Investment Board and Workforce Santa Cruz County, is trying to get a piece of a competitive $10 million pool allocated through the U.S. Department of Labor.

The three agencies would base their efforts out of NOVA's Connect! Job Seeker Center, at 420 S. Pastoria Ave. in Sunnyvale.

The agencies would work closely with business and educational contacts, offer coaches and mentors from industry and colleges and help develop career blueprints for young and unemployed people.

Sustainable
gardens hosts
Earth Weekend

Sunnyvale-based Sustainable Community Gardens will host an Earth Weekend celebration April 19 and 20.

The celebration will kick off with a plant sale April 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Charles Street Gardens, 433 Charles St.

Hundreds of vegetable, fruit and flower starts will be offered to the public for a tax-deductible suggested donation that benefits the volunteer-run community garden. Tours of the garden, a seed planting class for children and information from master gardeners will also be offered.

The group's first Earth Day Festival will be April 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Full Circle Farm, 1055 Dunford Way.

The free festival will include free food, live music, games for all ages and a silent auction for a brand-new Toyota Prius.
