Sewer, water
rate hikes
recommended

The Sunnyvale City Council is expected to consider raising residential water and sewer utility rates on June 3.

The increases, if the council adopts them for the 2008-09 fiscal year, would be 10 percent for water and 8.5 percent for sewer service. That would raise the total average monthly bill by $4.74 to $55.78.

The change is proposed to respond to a significant increase in the cost of water from the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and the Santa Clara Valley Water District and the need for upgrades to the city's wastewater treatment and collection system.

Commercial rates would increase by the same percentage. The council will consider solid waste rates when the city announces recommendations later this year.

Zero waste
meeting to
invite input

The "zero waste" policy that the Sunnyvale City Council will consider this year would require far-reaching changes to the flow of resources and waste through the city.

The city's Recycling and Solid Waste division is holding a meeting to see what businesses and residents think about the concept. The meeting will review zero-waste policies and examples of programs in other cities.

The meeting is scheduled April 30 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Sunnyvale Public Library, 665 W. Olive Ave., program rooms A and B.
