Around The Glen
Thorny challenges await the brave
It's that time of year again, when volunteers pick up their shears and tackle the popular roses at the Historic San Jose Municipal Rose Garden. The Rose Garden Neighborhood Preservation Association is asking for help to prune the 6,000 roses on Jan. 14, beginning at 10 a.m.
In the past, as many as 100 volunteers showed up for the annual event, former association president Terry Reilly said. Pruning the roses prepares the garden for Mother's Day weekend, when visitors' attendance peaks.
The garden is located on the corner of Naglee and Dana avenues in the Rose Garden neighborhood of San Jose. For more information call 408.236.2130, or visit www.rgnpa.org.

New Law: Be nice and let buses in
In the next few weeks, residents will notice black triangles appearing on the left rear of buses in the South Bay. The triangles will appear on all Valley Transportation Authority buses and Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District buses. When lit, the triangles resemble a "yield" street sign.
It's all part of a new state law that goes into effect on April 2, and requires drivers to yield to buses or be fined at least $35.
Local law enforcement agencies and the CHP will keep an eye on how well motorists follow the new rule during a test period starting when the law takes effect.
The goal of the "Yield to Bus" program is to decrease congestion in heavy-traffic counties, as well as support those who use public transit for commuting or other purposes.
