    Hospital welcomes its Senior Friends

Good Samaritan Hospital, at 2425 Samaritan Drive at the San Jose/Los Gatos border, encourages all interested local senior citizens in the West Valley area to join its chapter of the National Association of Senior Friends, a nonprofit hospital-based health and wellness program open to anyone 50 and older. The seniors in Good Sam's growing group take part in months filled with activities, outings and informational programs. Some are free; others have small fees. Following are some upcoming events.

    * Senior Friends Travel Faire. On Jan. 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., members and prospective members are invited to learn about all of the trips and tours happening throughout 2001. These include "Right Church Right Pew" in January, "Sweet Treat Tour" in February and a Sausalito outing in March. Prizes, refreshments and demonstrations are also part of the Travel Faire, which takes place in the hospital auditorium.

    * Seniors in Stride. These ongoing exercise classes take place in the hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation Center and are paced with the needs of active senior citizens in mind. Each 45-minute supervised class combines gentle aerobic activities with strengthening exercises for upper and lower body muscle groups. Stretching and relaxation are also included. Classes are offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.; Mondays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.; or Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. For more information, call 408.559.2011, ext. 4650.

Other Senior Friends activities include movies, theater performances, health screenings, a Lunch Bunch, mature driving courses and cooking classes. Membership is $15 per year. For information about membership or any of the above events, call 408.559.2555, or visit www.seniorfriends.homestead.com on the Internet.

    Account benefits federal payees

Those people who receive monthly Social Security, SSI, Veterans Administration or other federal checks can now have these payments automatically deposited into an Electronic Transfer Account, a federally insured account newly created by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Having an ETA not only reduces trips to the bank for seniors with mobility problems; it also reduces the chances of checks getting stolen from mailboxes. Anyone can open an ETA, even those who have been unable to qualify for a checking or savings account.

For more information, call 1.888.382.3311 (TDD: 1.877.326.5833), or visit www.eta-find.gov on the Internet.
