The Willow Glen ResidentAround theGlenDays Are Numbered Over the years, most of us have made those well-intentioned New Year's resolutions--like getting more involved in the community--then promptly forgotten them by the time Valentine's Day rolls around. Now the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors offers a way to commit to local participation straight through to the end of the millennium with its Census 2000 Complete Count Committee. The 15-member steering committee will oversee the local promotion of the upcoming census. The committee says that in order to reach the objective of increased accuracy, high-profile local figures will be recruited to increase census awareness, all residents will be encouraged to participate--especially historically under-represented segments of the population. The committee is also working to strengthen the Census Bureau's commitment to confidentiality. The board will make appointments in February 1999, so applicants are encouraged to apply ASAP at the Office of the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors, 70 W. Hedding St., 10th Floor, San Jose. Or call 299-4321. --Mary Spicuzza Postal rates rise with the new year Sending in official Publishers Clearing House entry forms will soon cost a little more. That's because beginning Jan. 10, first-class mail is going up one cent to 33 cents for 1-ounce mail. The rate increase is due to inflation, and because the United States Postal Service hasn't had a first-class increase in four years. But don't worry about getting stuck with a bunch of old 32-cent stamps. Customers need only add a 1-cent stamp, or use the new "H" stamps, worth 33 cents, which have been on sale for some time. Two- to three-day Priority Mail is going up 20 cents to $3.20. But as some rates are going up, others are taking a dive. Each additional ounce after the first for regular mail will cost a cent less than it did last year, at 22 cents per ounce. Several other rates for various post office services have also changed. Additional information about rate changes is available at the post office. --Michelle Alaimo
