A season that started with a bit of a sting took on a soothing tone last Friday night when the Willow Glen boys basketball team knocked off Silver Creek 61-50 on the Raiders' floor.
Willow Glen was stung with something of an upset to open league play when the Rams lost 50-40 to winless Branham on their home hardwood.
The Rams fell behind the Bruins 20-10 in the first period and 35-18 by intermission and could never make up the different.
It was a different story at Silver Creek on Friday, though. The Rams opened up a nine-point lead in the first and held that cushion until the fourth when they outscored the Raiders 21-12 to clinch the win.
Keith Doleshel was the scoring leader for the Rams with 20 points and Justin Johnson supported with 11.
Steve Rebagliati added nine points and Evan Ball popped seven. Each one had a three-pointer.
Andre Abeyta chipped in with six points, Max Courd had four and Chris Hobbs and Kaelan Yoppini added two apiece.
No Willow Glen player could get into double figures against Branham earlier in the week. Doleshel led the attack with nine points and Hobbs added eight, including a three-pointer.
Johnson and Will Howsman chipped in with six points apiece, Yoppini had five, Nick Ward four and Abeyta two.
WG girls lose two games
The Willow Glen girls basketball team dropped a couple of West Valley Division decisions last week, falling 37-24 to Branham and 38-34 to Andrew Hill.
The Rams were up a point at the half against Hill, leading 13-12. But the Falcons went on a 14-4 run in the third quarter and held on for the four-point win.
Junior guard Edna Sison pitched in 10 points, including a three-pointer, to lead all Willow Glen scorers in the game. Beth Habte supported with seven points, including a three.
Andrea Rojas added four points for the Rams, Bianca Gomez popped a three-pointer, and Lisa Comstock, Cynthia Salinas, Candace Gallegos, Kiley McKown and Crystal Salazar hit two points each.
It was a different story against the Bruins. The Rams fell behind early, trailing 14-4 after a quarter and 22-8 at the half, but fought back to cut the lead to a six by blitzing the Bruins 10-2 in the third. The comeback fell short, though, and Branham ended up pulling out a 13-point win.
Sison led the Rams with nine points, Rojas had five, Sequeena Holmes four, and Habte, McKown and Salazar two each.
The Rams, now 0-2 in the division and 1-9 for the year, will host Yerba Buena on Jan. 8, 5 p.m., before visiting Overfelt on Jan. 10, 7 p.m.
Big Wresting Match
The Willow Glen wrestling team will return to the mat this week after a long winter break, and the Rams will have their hands full when the challenge Mount Hamilton Division powerhouse Oak Grove on Jan. 8, 6:30 p.m., at Willow Glen.
Soccer Team Returns
The Willow Glen boys soccer team returns to the field this week for the first time since Dec. 21. The Rams will visit Pioneer on Jan. 9 and host Overfelt on Jan. 11 for a couple of 3:15 p.m. games in Mount Hamilton Division play.
