Thank you for the Mayfield column

I want to thank the Willow Glen Resident for the Mark W. Mayfield column in its Jan. 2 edition. Thank you for the marvelous illumination you have provided through the vehicle of your column. To think that through the simple ingestion of exorbitantly priced mineral slushes, my years can be so wonderfully extended. I suspect that I may have a few years on you, so I might actually expect to reach 170 or so! The service you have so selflessly provided for the untrammeled benefit of any who choose to accept it is an act of unequaled philanthropy. At the risk of sounding excessively grateful, I once more say thank you.

    Leave flags up

This is in reference to the "Flags along Lincoln are not a good idea" letter in the Dec. 19 issue of the The Willow Glen Resident.

I disagree with Allen M. Rice, the letter's author, about the American flags flying high along the avenue. I support the choice of our councilman, Ken Yeager, the Willow Glen Business and Professional Association and the Willow Glen Neighborhood Association.

I am proud to live in a town that wants to show such support for our country. So what if the flags are not hanging on manufactured flagpoles? It gives Willow Glen that small-town charm. I want to ask you: What is wrong with leaving our flags flying 24 hours a day? Our community should not stop showing our support and unity just because it is nighttime.

My wife and I often drive down Lincoln Avenue late in the day or night on the way home, and seeing our flags makes us proud and reinforces why we like living here in Willow Glen.

Our men and women serving our country in the past and today are not punching a time clock; they don't stop after just eight hours. Will Rice want to limit the neighborhood Christmas trees in the front yard to only three on each side of the street? Never mind the people that drive far to view the streets one after another and to see our community effort. Why can't they see at the same time the support we are giving our country as a community.
