SJ redevelopment agency hires new assistant director

The San Jose Redevelopment Agency hired attorney and transportation policy advisor Sharon L. Landers as its new assistant executive director. She began work Jan. 7.

Landers, who will report directly to agency Executive Director Susan Shick, was chosen after a nationwide search. Landers worked as transportation policy advisor to former New York City Mayors Edward Kock and David Dinkins and New York State Governors Hugh Carey and Mario Cuomo. She also worked for New Jersey Gov. Christine Whitman as deputy commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation. Most recently, she worked as the deputy CEO of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

San Jose residents to choose new carts

San Jose residents have until Feb. 25 to select new recycling carts, yard-trimmings carts and/or garbage mini-carts.

The new recycling carts are designed to make recycling more convenient for single-family-home residents, as all materials can be tossed unsorted into a single cart that can then be wheeled out to the street for pickup. Residents of apartments, condominiums and mobile homes will not receive new carts but will be able to throw all recyclable items into a single bin.

Recycling carts come in 96-, 64- or 32-gallon sizes, and the city is encouraging residents to choose the largest size--it is three times larger than the recycling bin the city currently uses.

Residents who prefer not to toss their yard clippings in the street for pickup may also choose a 96-, 64- or 32-gallon-size cart, at a cost of an additional $1 per month. The city is also making a 20-gallon garbage mini-cart available to those who don't need the space provided by a 32-gallon cart. The cost, at $14.50 per month, is less than the cost for larger sizes.

Residents will receive a brochure and postcard about the new carts in the mail this month and are invited to community meetings about the changes. The new carts will be delivered between July and October. For more information, call 408.277.2700 or visit www.sjrecycles.org.
