    Rivera, Jimenez star for Rams

Presentation girls win, Rams lose and tie

Juan Rivera and Christian Jimenez play very different roles on different end of the field for the Willow Glen boys soccer team.

And both played their roles to near perfection last week to lead the Rams to a 4-0 win over Piedmont Hills in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Rivera knocked in three goals and Jimenez kept Piedmont Hills from scoring at all in the important league win for Willow Glen.

The Rams, who improved to 4-0-1 in the division and to 9-1-3 for the year with the victory, were to end the first round of the league season against Lincoln on Jan. 11 and will open the second round of league against Independence on Jan. 13 in a pair of 3:30 p.m. games at Willow Glen.

"That's our biggest game coming up," said WG coach Sue Parisi of the Thursday battle with the 76ers. "We've just got to play our passing game."

The two clubs tied when they met to open the league season.

Rivera scored goals off assists from Osbi Gonzales and Hugo Sigala, and scored a third goal off a free kick. Ramon Duran also scored a goal off a header for the Rams.

Jimenez was flawless as the Willow Glen goalkeeper, and the coach also praised the work of sweeper Saul Villatoro, stopper Rudy Ochoa and fullbacks Duran and Manolo Rosales. "Our defense is playing real well," said Parisi.

The Willow Glen girls team, meanwhile, slipped to 1-2-3 in the Santa Teresa Division and to 4-2-3 overall, with a loss and a tie last week.

The Rams fought Overfelt to a scoreless tie, but earlier in the week had lost a 3-1 decision to Westmont despite a second-half goal by Sara Bruni off an assist from Kellie Arnone. The Warriors had opened up a 3-0 lead by halftime.

The Presentation girls are off to a 5-0-1 start in the rugged Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL thanks to a couple of tight 2-1 wins over Prospect and Leigh last week.

Junior midfielder Kelly Sweitzer and freshman forward Jennifer Tuttle each scored goals to lift the Panthers to the win over Prospect. Sweitzer scored off an assist from junior Jaime Moore and Tuttle scored off an assist from senior Jennifer Javernick.

The clubs were locked in a scoreless tie at intermission, but Presentation outscored Prospect 2-1 in the second half to clinch the win.

The Panthers, 9-2-2 for the year, outscored Leigh 2-1 in the first half, then held on through a scoreless second half to secure the victory.

Tuttle scored off a Moore assist for Presentation's first goal, and passes from junior fullback Rachel Field and Javernick set up sophomore forward Selina Ching for the goal that proved the game winner.
