Jaguars top Dons in Women's basketball

The San Jose City College women's basketball team improved to 21-1 for the year and to 4-0 in the Coast Conference with a lopsided 74-55 win over De Anza Community College last Friday night.

The Jaguars, currently No. 2 in the state rankings, were led by Arbatisha Kitchen, who pumped in 19 points, and Cortney Keegan (St. Francis), who tossed in 18.

Kerri Dunn (Presentation) and Bernadette Suffle popped 15 points each, and Jane Riley (Westmont) had 10 in the loss for the Dons.

The Lady Dons had entered the week ranked No. 9 in the state.

Earlier in the week, the Jaguars whipped Hartnell 90-52 behind a 20-point effort by Kitchen. Keegan fired in 17 points for the winners, and Tami Monson (Mitty) had 11, Natalia Jonas 10, Nina Vinther (Los Gatos) eight, Kristie Reed six, Christina Lombardo (Leigh) and Brie Ahern (Homestead) five apiece, Abby Lopes (Del Mar) four, Gina Paradiso (Cupertino) two and Kim Fujii (Prospect) and La-Keeshia Thomas (Silver Creek) one each.

San Jose will take its perfect conference record to Cabrillo on Jan. 21, 7 p.m., before hosting Monterey on Jan. 23, 5:30 p.m.

Vikings top Jaguars in men's basketball

They were ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in the state heading into their Friday night game.

And nothing happened to change that ranking when the powerful West Valley Community College and San Jose City College men's basketball teams collided last week.

Sophomore Darrell Teat poured in 32 points to lead the Vikings to an impresive 86-78 victory over the Jaguars. The win left West Valley 19-2 for the season and 1-0 in the Coast Conference.

Dave Fergerson led all San Jose scorers with 24 points. Lynn Washington pitched in 20 for the Jags and Leroy Mayo added 15.

San Jose is now 19-4 for the year and 0-1 in the conference.
