Rams finish 7th at Overfelt tourney

The Willow Glen wrestling team bounced back from a "horrible match" against Silver Creek to finish seventh at the Overfelt Classic tournament last Saturday at the East San Jose high school.

The Rams were pounded by Silver Creek in a dual match in the Mount Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League on Thursday, but rebounded in impressive fashion at Overfelt.

Michael Jaramillo led the Willow Glen showing at Overfelt with an individual championship at 140 pounds. Jaramillo pinned all four of his opponents, including a pin with four seconds left in the first round in the finals.

"It was his first championship of the year," said WG coach Phil Luna. "It was pretty exciting, and it helped us out big time."

The Rams ran up 110 points to finish seventh, just a point and half behind host Overfelt (111.5). Hollister won the team title with 183.50 points and College Park was second at 166.50.

"What a good, good tournament it was for us," said Luna.

Jaramillo, now 24-4 for the year, pinned in 27 seconds in his first match and in 1:27 in his second. After winning by fall with three seconds left in the second round in the semifinals, he notched another first-round pin in the finals.

Adrian Morales was second at 171 pounds for the Rams. Nailing fourths were Amir Faraj-Perry at 275 and Frank Sarinana at 135 with Sam Olivas sixth at 112, Steve Lopez at 145 and Daniel Cousino at 152 each seventh and Richard Salaz eighth at 160.

A day earlier, the Rams had finished sixth in the team standings at the Overfelt junior varsity tournament. Mike Blanda (145), Jason Grossman (152) and Ricardo Hernandez (140) were each individual champions for the Rams, and Blanda and Grossman were named the tournament's outstanding wrestlers.

Eugene Martinez was second at 135, Robert Orepeza was fourth at 160 and Mike Estrella was fifth at 119.
