Cunningham is Fiscalini's choice for the Dist. 6 council seat

Outgoing city councilman cites former WGNA president's record

Despite her admission that she has small feet, Kris Cunningham says she is to ready to fill outgoing councilman Frank Fiscalini's shoes.

Cunningham's District 6 campaign efforts got a major boost Jan. 15, when Fiscalini formally endorsed her at a gathering of family and supporters at Bellarmine College Prep.

"It's such exciting news. It means so much to me," Cunningham said. "I've worked with Frank for six years. I've seen how his staff has been taking care of this district."

Fiscalini, who is leaving office because of term limits, said he decided to support Cunningham because of her focus and her record of community work. "I've observed Kris, and she's totally committed to doing the right thing," Fiscalini said. "She's proven she's the only candidate who has a track record in the community. She can do the work and follow up on it."

Cunningham served for two years as president of the Willow Glen Neighborhood Association.

Supporters echo praise about Cunningham's neighborhood involvement. Mary Pizzo recalls a recent community cleanup in the Gregory Plaza area. "All the candidates came and shook people's hands, but Kris stayed for two hours with a snow shovel, shoveling charred remains [of a burnt down garage]," Pizzo said. "It was gross. I just looked at her and said, 'I'm impressed you care.' "

"I don't see her going for [higher] political office any time soon, so I know there's a real commitment to the neighbors," Peggy Aaron said.

The meeting also served as a rally for supporters to get involved in the campaign. A district map listed which pockets still needed precinct captains to knock on doors and pass out information. Residents also signed up for lawn signs.

Fiscalini made an appeal for neighbors' participation. "If you want Kris elected, you will need to make to her the same commitment that she is making to you. That's real sacrifice." He also promised the help of his aides who will work for Camp Cunningham in their off time. "My staff will work hard to raise money, walk the precincts and make phone calls."

Cunningham backers trust that these efforts will pay off to resolve some of Willow Glen's development issues.

"I hope she will continue in the same spirit as Frank Fiscalini--the whole concept of preservation as well as enhancement of the neighborhood," Peggy Rossignol said. "I would like to maintain a balance of growth and uniqueness of the neighborhood."
