Fire on fire

The Fire Soccer Club of Willow Glen turned back defending state champion Almaden 1-0 in the finals of the District 2 Cup tournament.

It marked the fourth tournament championship of the year for the Fire, a team of 12- and 13-year-old boys from Willow Glen. The Fire backed up that championship with a second-place finish in the Modesto championships.

Adan Ramirez, Jeff Barry, David Orosco, Mike Bianchi and John Pinelli are top players for the Fire along with captains Dean Picone and Phil Bestrom. Joey Buttitta and Nick Keller share the goalkeeping chores, and Aris Deylan and Alessandro Stazio are top goal scorers. Dave Evans, Dave von Stockhausen, Jarod Bibb, Cemal Ozemek, Sean Lopes, P.J. Murphy and Kyle Millerick are other members of the squad coached by Greg Pinelli, Pablo Ramirez and Jim von Stockhausen.

Youth baseball deadline coming

The deadline for youngsters interested in playing spring and summer baseball is rapidly approaching. For more information on local leagues:

Lincoln Glen Little League, open to players ages 5-18 (as of July 31, 1999), call Tom Feasby at 264-1125;

Willow Glen Little League, open to boys and girls ages 5-18, call 450-8502;

San Jose PAL Pony Baseball, open to players ages 7-12, call Officer Kevin White at 272-9725, ext. 102.

Adult volleyball signups starting

Signups for teams and individuals interested in playing in the San Jose men's adult volleyball league are now being accepted. League play begins Feb. 22 in the gym at the Camden Lifetime Activities Center. The cost is $235 per team, and the registration deadline is Feb. 19. For more information, call Laura Hardy at 277-5556.

All-Comers Meets

Los Gatos will host a series of all-comers track and field meets on Saturdays, 12:30 p.m., through Feb. 27. Athletes will compete in open, masters men, women's, boys and girls divisions. The cost is $3 for athletes and $2 for spectators. Proceeds go toward track resurfacing at the high school. For more information, call Willie Harmatz at 354-7365.
