Clutch victories for Rams

Presentation girls push record to 5-0

By Dick Sparrer

Willow Glen needed a couple of victories.

The Rams were rolling through the season with an impressive 12-1 record, and they were off to a 2-0 start in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

But the boys' basketball team from Willow Glen stumbled in the second week of the league season, losing back-to-back games to Mt. Pleasant and Del Mar.

The two losses evened Willow Glen's league record at 2-2, and the Rams desperately needed to beat Westmont and Valley Christian last week to get back on the winning track in the division.

And that's just what they did.

Senior standouts Dion Saunders and Rayvon Jackson took charge last week, combining for 43 points to stop the short skid by leading the Rams to a lopsided 63-34 win over the Warriors on the Westmont floor.

Saunders poured in a team-high 23 points, and Jackson buried 10 field goals to finish with 20 points in the Willow Glen victory.

Nich Holt dropped a pair of three-pointers on his way to eight points for the Rams. Manny Myers had a three among his seven points, and Guy Beahm dropped a three. Cory Warren added two points.

Willow Glen jumped out to a commanding 20-4 lead in the first period and blasted Westmont 21-8 in the second quarter to take control of the game by intermission, 41-12. The Rams coasted from there to the win.

Willow Glen, 4-2 in the division and 16-3 for the year, capped the week with an impressive 51-44 win over previously unbeaten Valley Christian.

The Rams led 10-5 after a period and 24-19 at the half, but fell behind 31-27 heading into the final period. Willow Glen came on strong in the fourth, though, topping the Warriors 24-13 to pull out the important seven-point victory.

Myers had the hot hand for the Rams in the win. Four of his field goals were three-pointers, and he finished with a team-high 16 points in the game.

Jackson supported with 14 points in the win, and Saunders joined the two in double digits with 10 points.

Beahm had a three among his five points, Warren had four points and Holt added two points.

Panthers remain unbeaten

The Presentation girls' basketball team pounded winless Santa Teresa 66-48 on Friday night to improve to 5-0 in the rugged Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL.

The win puts Presentation on a collision course with Mitty in the division. The two clubs share the Mt. Hamilton lead with matching 5-0 records. The Monarchs are 17-2 for the year, and the Panthers are 14-4.

Senior sensation Molly Shanley pumped in 21 points to lead Presentation to the easy win over the Saints. Shanley had a three-pointer among her eight field goals, and she added four points at the free-throw line.

Shanley topped a long list of 13 players who scored in the game for the Panthers. Cheyenne Brown and Megan Moniz tossed in seven points apiece, and Jessica Borello added six.

Rebecca Cadman, Jaleh Donaldson and Sara Werner chipped in with four points each; Caitlyn Foley and Cassie Bienemann added three apiece; Jessica Maynes, Rosanna Moreno and Stacey Bolaris hit two each; and Sarah Incerty had one.

The Panthers led by just three after a period, 14-11 but outscored Santa Teresa 15-8 in the second and 22-10 in the third to take control of the game.

The Panthers had opened the week with an important 47-35 win over Westmont.

Shanley led Presentation with 20 points, including a three, and Werner and Donaldson tossed in 10 points apiece. Borello also hit a three-pointer, and Moniz and Moreno had two points each.

Willow Glen girls fall

The Willow Glen girls, meanwhile, slipped to 0-5 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL, losing 55-21 to Oak Grove.

Sophomore forward Kelly McCloskey led the Rams in scoring with nine points, and junior center Letisha Trumpo added seven. Shannon Donovan chipped in with three points, and Brigitte Boney added two.

The Rams were outscored in each of the four periods in the loss and fell back 32-10 as early as the half.
