    Blewett Avenue Traffic

I am a Blewett Avenue resident and my neighbors and I are concerned about the speeding traffic on our residential street. We contacted the city of San Jose about adding more signs and received no response. We called the San Jose Police Department and received a call back from someone who had the complaint we left them all confused. We were then told they often gave out tickets to speeders on our street; however, no one in the neighborhood has seen them patrolling our street for six months or more. We then emailed Ken Yeager and again received no response. We are fed up.

Due to the lack of action from our local government officials we took matters into our own hands and ordered "Keep Kids Alive, Drive 25" signs for our street. We thought the signs would catch the attention of the hundreds of speeding cars that fly down Blewett Avenue every day and perhaps slow them down, but again, no luck. The residents on our street do not appreciate the lack of respect shown by all those who, in their daily rush to and from work, use our street as a shortcut to bypass Lincoln Avenue congestion. They show no regard for the 25-mile-per-hour speed limit, not to mention the danger they pose to our children.

Since the letter was written, Vicki McGowan reports she has been contacted by city officials and City Councilman Ken Yeager who will set up a traffic-calming program for the area. --Editor
