Rams roll to team win over Westmont

    By Dick Sparrer

Amir Faraj-Perry is trying very hard to find out just where he belongs. The Willow Glen wrestler can't quite make weight consistently at 215 pounds, but he's dwarfed by some of the competitors he runs up against in the 275-pound weight class.

Still, he's being having a pretty good year for the Rams as he's bounced back and forth in the two divisions. And wrestling in the heavier 275-pound bracket last Tuesday night, he wasn't pretty good... he was outstanding.

Faraj-Perry helped the Rams to a 49-21 win over Westmont when he won by fall at 275 pounds. And he won it in a hurry.

Faraj-Perry pinned in just 23 seconds to account for one of the three Willow Glen pins in the dual match victory.

"He's doing well," said WG head coach Phil Luna of Faraj-Perry. "He's been working hard in practice, and he's doing a heckuva job."

He did a good enough job last Tuesday to help the Rams to a win that evened their record at 2-2 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

But then, a win was almost a foregone conclusion for the Rams. Luna figured going in that his squad had a pretty good chance of beating Westmont. And when the Rams claimed 24 team points on four forfeits, Luna was sure of the victory.

Of the nine matches wrestled on the night, Willow Glen won five--three by fall.

Faraj-Perry had the quick fall at 275 pounds, and Jason Grossman pinned with 33 seconds remaining in the first round at 160 pounds. Steve Lopez won by fall with 47 seconds left to wrestle in the 154-pound match.

Mike Blanda roughed up his Westmont opponent for a 16-4 major division win at 145 pounds, and Rueben Rodriguez won 9-4 at 130 pounds.

Claiming forfeit wins for the Rams were Sam Olivas at 112, Victor Medina at 119, Frank Sarinana at 135 and Mike Jaramillo at 140.

Adrian Morales dropped a tough 9-4 decision to Westmont's Garreth Gorman at 171 pounds. Gorman is currently ranked No. 2 in the Central Coast Section at the weight.

The Rams, 6-5 overall in dual matches this season, was scheduled to host Overfelt on Jan. 29 and visit Santa Teresa on Feb. 7 in a pair of 6:30 p.m. matches to close out the dual-match season.

"We're looking to finish 4-2," said Luna. "We match up pretty good with [Overfelt and Santa Teresa]."

Willow Glen heads to Silver Creek on Feb. 2 for the BVAL junior varsity finals. Wrestling begins Saturday at 9 a.m.

The following Saturday, Feb. 9, the BVAL varsity finals will be held at James Lick.
