New Airport Security
New federal regulations for airport security are scheduled for implementation beginning this month.
Jan. 18 was the deadline for airports to check all luggage--estimated at 1.3 billion pieces every year--for explosives either through security personnel, bomb-sniffing dogs, explosive-detection machines or luggage-passenger matches.
Beginning Feb. 1, passengers will pay new security fees: $2.50 per flight, not exceeding $5 for a one-way trip or $10 for a roundtrip. Fees are expected to total $900 million this year.
On Feb. 17, the new Transportation Security Administration, with 28,000 security screeners, thousands of air marshals and other personnel, will take over aviation security from the Federal Aviation Administration.
By Nov. 19, all new federal security screeners must be recruited, hired, tested, trained and deployed.
By Dec. 31, all airports must have explosive-detection machines--about 2,000 at a cost of $1.4 million each, paid for by the U.S. Department of Transportation--to screen all checked baggage.

The Willow Glen meeting will be Feb. 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Willows Senior Center, 2175 Lincoln Ave. in Room 6. Meetings will also be held Feb. 7 at the Mexican Heritage Plaza and Feb. 19 at the George Shirakawa Community Center.
Project artists Anna Murch and Douglas Hollis will be present at the meetings to learn about the community's thoughts on the work.
For more information, call project manager Mary Rubin at 408.277.2808.
