Grandparents Day brings the generations together
By Melissa Matchak
Grandparents of students at St. Christopher's Elementary School in Willow Glen recently had the chance to share in their grandchild's school day during the second Grandparent's Day held at the school. Approximately 600 grandparents were welcomed at St. Christopher's on Jan. 26, to participate in the classrooms and a prayer service.
Arlene Ernst, St. Christopher's principal, said the first time they held Grandparent's Day was in 1999. Ernst said this year's event included a variety of activities planned in each classroom, depending on the age level of the students.
Some teachers planned to have their students read stories they had written about their grandparents. Others asked the visiting grandparents to talk about what life was like when they were in the grade level their grandchild is currently in, or how California has changed since they were in elementary school.
The students and grandparents were divided into two groups, one with the kindergarten through fourth-grade students, the other made up of the fifth- through eighth-graders and their grandparents.
While one group participated in classroom-based activities, the other attended a prayer service in the church. After a half-hour, the groups switched. Ernst said the prayer service included students reading poems they had written about grandparents. Group activities were followed by the opportunity for the grandparents to take their grandchild to lunch.
The event was a kick-off program for Catholic Schools Week, which began on Jan. 28, and included open houses for parents who were interested in having their children attend one of the participating schools.
