    'Team effort' for WG girls

Three senior wrestlers win on 'Senior Night'

It's one of the most overused of the sports clichés when a coach says after a victory that "it was a total team effort."

But when the Willow Glen girls soccer team won twice last week in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, that's exactly what it was.

No less than nine players figured in the scoring with either goals or assists when the Rams put together back-to-back wins over Lincoln and Pioneer.

The Rams opened the week with a 3-0 win over Lincoln thanks to goals by Colleen Wozney, Samantha Bruni and Stephanie Ogletree. Lisa Hunter chipped in with an assist on Ogletree's second-half score.

Kelsey Giambruno knocked in a couple of goals and also added an assist to lead the Rams to a 5-1 win over Pioneer two days later.

Giambruno scored off assists from Bruni and Aubrey Schatz, and Hunter scored off an assist from Giambruno.

Lindsey Herauf scored off an assist from Schatz in the second half and Courtney Livak scored off an assist from Lindsey Rovai later in the game.

The two wins helped the Rams improve to 8-3 in the division and to 9-7-1 for the year.

In other girls soccer action, Presentation lost two of three decisions in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL. The Panthers are now 6-3-3 in the division and 10-5-5 for the year.

Presentation finished the week with a 2-1 win over Piedmont Hills. Freshman midfielder Amanda Brandt knocked in an unassisted goal in the first half, and sophomore midfielder Aubrey Ellzey scored a second-half goal off an assist from senior strike Jaime Moore, a team co-captain for the Panthers.

Earlier in the week, junior striker Jennifer Tuttle knocked in a goal off an Ellzey assist, but Presentation lost a tough 3-1 decision to first-place Mitty. The Pantheres also lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to Leigh.

The Panthers close out the regular season this week when they host Leland on Feb. 7 and visit Independpence on Feb. 9 in a pair of 3 p.m. games.

In boys soccer action, Willow Glen lost twice last week, falling 1-0 to Santa Teresa and 2-0 to Prospect. The Rams slipped to a disappointing 1-8-1 in the Mount Hamilton Division with the losses.

    Saints pin Rams

The Willow Glen wrestling team could manage wins in just five weight classes in a tough 49-22 Mount Hamilton Division loss to Santa Teresa last week.

Pins by Daniel Valadez and Mike Jaramillo topped the list of five Willow Glen wins in the match.

Valadez pinned 1:19 into the second round at 137 pounds for the Rams, and Jaramillo won by fall with 11 seconds left in the second round at 147.

James Arballo rolled to a 9-2 win at 132 pounds for Willow Glen. Henry Chavez won 8-4 at 142 and Memo Rivera won 11-3 at 173.

It was 'Senior Night' for the Rams and, despite the team loss, seniors Chavez, Valadez and Rivera all celebrated the occassion with victories.

The Rams will be looking for a strong finish to the BVAL season this weekend when they compete in the league finals slated for Feb. 10 at Overfelt. Wrestling begins Saturday at 10 a.m. with the finals that evening.

    Rams lose two

The Willow Glen boys basketball team dropped a pair of games last week, falling 56-44 to Yerba Buena and 55-25 to Valley Christian. The Rams are now 1-7 in the Santa Teresa Division and 3-19 for the year.

Joe Gutierrez tossed in 15 points to lead all WG scorers against YB. Jon Williams added 12 points, Pete Watts hit 11 and Mihn Phan had six. Watts dropped three three-pointers in the game and Gutierrez and Phan hit one apiece.

Phan had a pair of threes among his 10 points in the loss to Valley. Williams added five points, Chris Lyons had four and Watts and Mike Anello each dropped three-pointers.
