Red Cross issues reminder about earthquake dangers

    By Kate Carter

Now is a good time for residents of Willow Glen and other sections of the Bay Area to think about how they will survive an earthquake, according to the Santa Clara Valley chapter of the American Red Cross.

The devastating earthquakes in El Salvador and India last month are frightening examples of the damage these natural disasters can cause, Red Cross spokesman Anthony Marek said.

"We are going to get hit with a major earthquake," he said. "We just don't know when. The best thing to do is be prepared."

Being prepared, he said, includes creating safe environments inside buildings, knowing what to do during the shaking and having the knowledge and provisions to survive for a minimum of three days without electricity or gas, running water or immediate emergency assistance.

Make sure that tall and heavy furniture, water heaters and wall hangings are secured to wall studs and add latches to cupboard doors. Locate convenient safe places to be during an earthquake at homes, schools and offices, such as beneath sturdy desks and tables, under doorjambs or against walls away from windows and unstable items.

The Red Cross also says people should have disaster supply kits complete with a gallon of water per day for each person, canned and dried food and a hand-operated can opener, battery-powered flashlights and radios and extra batteries and first aid kits with essential medicines. In addition, the group advises residents to keep kits at home, at the office and in the car in accessible places; establish a reunification plan and an outside contact person for your family if you are separated during an earthquake; and know how to provide first aid and CPR.
