What do parents need to do to help improve schools?
When the API scores were published on Jan. 17, my neighbor and I felt the same frustration, almost panic, that we did last year when we read results for Willow Glen Elementary School, Willow Glen Middle School and Willow Glen High School.
As parents of preschoolers, is there anything we can do now to help our neighborhood schools dramatically improve their academic performance?
Although I've done some investigation, I know I don't understand the complexity of the problems that have existed for so long.
And, I realize that scores aren't the only thing that make up a school.
But, they are important and in my communications with administrators, I don't sense urgency about the rankings, nor do I get an impression that they expect dramatic improvement.
So, if it's time for a radical approach, what can we do? If it takes money, it exists in Willow Glen.
As my neighbor suggested, there may be families willing to donate $500, $1,000, or more a year if it means that these Willow Glen schools can perform at the top of the academic rankings. If it takes a class action suit, as Michael Johnson suggested, can we do anything to help it along?
Because there is so much talent and commitment in Willow Glen, we want to to make that energy work toward helping our public schools, not just the private ones. If it takes our time or our signatures, just tell us what we need to do!
