Rams, Panthers tops in soccer standings

By Dick Sparrer

Michael Herauf saw it coming.

He saw it as early as November when he first met up with his Willow Glen girls' soccer team to prepare for the 1997-98 season.

He saw a championship-caliber team coming together, and he predicted that his Rams would win the title in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Now, the Rams sit four games away from realizing Herauf's preseason expectations.

Willow Glen enters the final week of the regular season with a 9-1 division record and shares first place in league play with Mt. Pleasant.

The Rams visit Andrew Hill on Feb. 10 and host Silver Creek on Feb. 12 in a couple of 3:15 p.m. games. Two other rained out makeup games are all that remain in the Willow Glen season.

Willow Glen improved to 9-1 in the division with two lopsided victories last week. The Rams pounded James Lick 5-1 and blanked Yerba Buena 5-0 to remain in the first-place tie.

Freshman forward Colleen Wozny continued her high-scoring ways with five of her team's 10 goals in the two wins last week.

Wozny knocked in two goals and Melissa Ybarra, and Kellie Arnone each had a goal and an assist in Willow Glen's 5-0 win over the Warriors.

Kristen Rovai also added a goal for the Rams, and Lindsey Rovai had an assist.

Wozny had buried three goals, and sophomore midfielder Kristina Gerard had a goal and three assists in Willow Glen's 5-1 win over the Comets earlier in the week. K. Rovai scored off an L. Rovai assist in the win.

The Presentation girls, meanwhile, held onto first place in the Mt. Hamilton Division with wins over Independence and Mitty.

The Panthers, 9-0 in the division and 12-1 for the year, edged Mitty 2-1 on goals by Danielle Slaton and Megan Chimenti. Slaton, Breana Boling and Megan Gurney had assists in the win.

Slaton knocked in three goals and had an assist, and B. Boling added an a goal and an assist in a 6-0 win over the 76ers. Gurney and Sarah Bryson also scored goals and Chimenti, Julie Stamps and Jennifer Javernick had assists.
