Rams ready to host CCS soccer game

    By Dick Sparrer

The season ended on a losing note for the Willow Glen boys soccer team.

But the Rams aren't letting a 2-0 loss to Overfelt get them down. Because that was just the end of the regular season... there's a whole new season starting this week.

Willow Glen will be at home on Feb. 13 to open play in the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs. The Rams, 9-7-4 for the year after a 5-5-2 finish in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, will host Mitty (8-7-6) at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The winner goes on to face No. 1 seed Pioneer (13-2-4) on Saturday, probably at San Jose PAL Stadium.

"My boys are in shape, they're physically ready and the talent is there," said Willow Glen coach Sue Parisi. "We'll just have to see if they're mentally ready."

Parisi didn't think her Rams were mentally ready last week against Overfelt. Despite a solid effort by sophomore Nathan Tom, the Rams lost 2-0 to the Royals after going undefeated for five games in a row--including 1-0 wins over co-champs Leland and Pioneer.

Tom started at stopper, but moved to sweeper during the game to get things under control for the Rams. Still, Willow Glen couldn't get the ball to Saul Villatoro and the other top scorers.

The coach is hoping such problems are behind her Rams, and Willow Glen is looking forward to the playoffs.

"It should be pretty exciting," she said.

Willow Glen earned a home game, despite finishing fourth in the Mt. Hamilton Division.

"We had a lot of points because we played such a hard schedule," said Parisi. "So we fared pretty well."

    Panthers in playoffs

The Presentation girls soccer also earned a CCS berth. The Panthers, 10-4-6 after an 8-3-3 finish in the Mt. Hamilton Division, will face Palo Alto (14-5-1) on Feb. 16.

Presentation dropped a 1-0 nod to first-place Mitty last Thursday to close out the regular season.

Earlier in the week, goals by Aubrey Ellzey and Jackie Newman sparked the Panthers to a 2-1 win over Leland.

    Rams nail win

The Willow Glen girls closed out the season by winning one of three games last week.

Karyn Faria knocked in a first-half goal off a Kelsey Giambruno assist to lead the Rams to a 1-0 win over Independence.

Earlier in the week, the Rams had lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Mt. Pleasant, and they finished up the season with a 3-1 loss to Oak Grove on Thursday. Janelle Zetterquist scored a goal off an assist from Aubrey Schatz in the loss to the Eagles.
