Two wins in the final week of the regular season helped the girls soccer team at Presentation roll to a strong finish in the Mount Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Strong enough, in fact, that the Panthers rolled right into the Central Coast Section Division III playoffs.

First-year head coach Tom Sepulveda and his Panthers earned the No. 4 seed in the division and will open the playoffs on Feb. 17, 2:30 p.m., against Mercy of Burlingame at Sequoia High School in Redwood City. Mercy (12-5-3) is the No. 5 seed in the tournament.

Presentation, 12-5-5 for the year, won two games last week to cap the regular season. The Panthers finished the year with an 8-3-3 record in league play.

Senior midfielder Allie Berthold knocked in a first-half goal off an assist from freshman striker Nicki Nigos and senior co-captain Jaime Moore scored unassisted to lead the Panthers to a 2-1 win over Leland to open the week.

Leland's lone goal came in the second half after Presentation had already opened up a 2-0 lead.

Senior midfielder Kelly Sweitzer knocked in two goals, one on a penalty kick, to lead the Panthers to a 4-1 win over Independence to close out the regular season.

Nigos scored a first-half goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Aubrey Ellzey, and junior striker Jennifer Tuttle rounded out the scoring with a goal off a Sweitzer assist.

Julie Alves, a senior marking back, and Marie Gutto, a senior goalkeeper, join Moore as co-captains for the Panthers.

    Rams win two, too

The Willow Glen girls also finished league play with three wins last week, but the Rams came up short in their bid to make the CCS playoffs.

Willow Glen beat Oak Grove 4-2, edged Overfelt 1-0 and blanked Del Mar 3-0 to finish the year with an 11-3 record in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL. The Rams ended up 12-5-1 overall.

Senior Lindsey Rovai finished her Willow Glen soccer career in grand fashion with four goals and two assists in the three wins last week.

Rovai scored all three of the Willow Glen goals in the 3-0 win over the Dons on Thursday. Aubrey Schatz, Colleen Wozny and Samantha Bruni each had assists in the win.

A goal and an assist from Rovai had sparked the Rams to the 4-2 win over Oak Grove to open the week.

Bruni scored off a Rovai assist to get the Rams going, and Kelsey Giambruno scored off a Julie Drake assist to give Willow Glen a 2-1 lead at the half.

Wozney scored off a Rovai assist in the second half and Rovai closed out the scoring and the win when she scored off an assist from Courtney Livak.

Sandwiched between the two victories was a tight 1-0 win over the Royals. A second-half goal by Wozny off a Lindsey Herauf assist was the difference in the game.

    WG boys fall

The Willow Glen boys, meanwhile, lost twice last week to finish the year 1-10-1 in the Mt. Hamilton Division.

Senior Daniel Villafuerte scored a first-half goal off an assist from senior Jorge Villafuerte, but the Rams ended up falling 2-1 to Santa Teresa.

The clubs were locked in a 1-1 tie at the half, but the Saints broke the deadlock with a second-half goal.

Senior Manola Rosales scored on a penalty kick, but it was too little too late for the Rams against Overfelt. Willow Glen lost a 4-1 decision to the Royals, giving up two goals in each half.

    Chavez in finals

Henry Chavez of Willow Glen finished his senior wrestling season in style--by reaching the finals in his weight class at the BVAL tournament last weekend at Overfelt.

Actually, because he made it to the finals, his season isn't finished yet. Chavez will advance to the Central Coast Section championships set for Feb. 23 and 24 at Independence High School.

Chavez tops a list of three Rams who have qualified for the CCS tournament. Seniors Daniel Valadez and Adam Copas also placed high enough at the BVAL meet last weekend to win berths in the section finals.

Chavez made it to the finals at 142 pounds before losing a tough 3-0 decision to Kenny Bertron of Oak Grove. His second-place finish was the best for any Willow Glen wrestler in the tournament.

Valadez came through with a fourth-place finish at 137 pounds for the Rams. He lost his last match 10-1 to Tan Nguyen of Leland.

Copas won by forfeit in his last match to clinch fifth place at 154 pounds for the Rams.

    Rams lose two

The Willow Glen boys basketball team lost 51-37 to Prospect and 45-24 to Overfelt last week to drop to 1-9 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.

Senior center Jon Willians tossed in 11 points and Adam Saucedo had nine in the loss the Panthers. Mihn Phan hit a pair of three-pointers on his way to eight points, Chris Lyons had a three among his four points, Pete Watts hit three points and Kaelan Yoppini had two.

Saucedo led all WG scorers with nine points in the loss to the Royals. Williams added six and Phan, Lyons and Watts each popped three-pointers.
