Rams and Panthers ready for CCS playoffs
By Dick Sparrer
The regular season may have ended last week for most high school soccer teams in the Santa Clara Valley. But not for the Willow Glen boys or the Presentation girls.
Nope, the Rams and Panthers will play on.
The Willow Glen boys, champions in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, and the Presentation girls, runners-up in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL, have each earned places in the Central Coast Section playoffs.
The Rams, 11-0-1 in division play and 16-1-3 for the year, will open play in the CCS Division I event this week when they host Alvarez (10-4-3) on Feb. 16, 2:30 p.m., in a first-round game. The winner advances to the CCS quarterfinals against the Leigh-Menlo Atherton winner on Feb. 19, noon, at PAL Stadium.
The Panthers, 10-0-4 in the division and 13-2-5 for the year, open the CCS Division II playoffs on Feb. 19, noon, against Notre Dame-Belmont at Sacred Heart Prep.
The Panthers enter the playoffs after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Mitty last week. The Monarchs were still able to hang on for the division championship with a 12-1-1 record, good for 25 points to 24 for Presentation.
Three second-half goals helped the Panthers overcome a 2-1 halftime deficit to post the exciting victory. Kelly Sweitzer had two assists, and Alison Berthold, Megan Chimenti, Rachel Field and Aubrey Ellzey each scored goals in the Presentation victory. Jaime Moore also added an assist.
The Panthers were dealt a tough blow earlier in the week when they were tied 1-1 by Leigh.
The Willow Glen boys, meanwhile, wrapped up the league season with a 2-1 win over Lincoln. Manolo Rosales knocked in goal off a Gilbert Lozoya assist and Osvaldo Gonzales scored off an assist from Dustin Cohen to give the Rams a 2-0 halftime lead, and they held on for the victory.
Juan Rivera and Hugo Sigala were defensive standouts for the Rams in the win over the Lions.
The Willow Glen girls closed out the season with a 4-2 win over Mt. Pleasant. Lindsey Rovai had a goal and an assist, and Colleen Wozny and Samantha Bruni also scored for the Rams.
The Rams, 4-0 losers to Piedmont Hills earlier in the week, finished the year 6-5-3 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL and 9-5-3 overall.
