Just in time for the coming of spring, the American Cancer Society has kicked off its 13th annual Daffodil Days campaign, its nationwide fundraiser. As one of the first flowers to emerge in spring, daffodils symbolize hope and new beginnings; the ACS uses sale of the flowers to further its dream of a cancer-free world.
Through March 5, ACS volunteers are taking orders for freshly cut daffodil bouquets--with or without vases--as well as larger spring arrangements and corporate arrangements. Daffodil Days T-shirts, polo shirts and limited edition "Dreamsicle" figurines are also available. "Gifts of Hope" are another option, in which donors purchase bouquets in vases that are given anonymously to cancer patients in local hospitals.
Out of every Daffodil Days dollar raised, 71 cents goes directly to the ACS's fight against cancer. Among the ACS's program are youth and adult cancer support groups, transportation to and from cancer treatments and medical equipment loans for home use.
Flowers will be available for delivery the week of March 22. Orders totaling more than $50 will be delivered free to one address. Smaller orders may be picked up at various locations in the county. For prices and more information, call the local ACS office at 879-1032 ext. 150 or 1-800-ACS-2345.

Willow Glen racks up more bike parking
Only a few months ago, Jo-Ann Collins, bicycle coordinator for the City of San Jose, was unwrapping newfangled bike racks ordered for the Willow Glen area. Initially unsure of how many businesses would be willing to install bike parking, Collins is pleased to announce that interest in alternative transportation has been overwhelmingly high. So many businesses have expressed interest that she's already ordering more bike racks for Lincoln Ave.
New racks were recently installed at Willow Glen Wood-Fired Pizza, La Villa Delicatessen, Noah's Bagels, Aqui Mex Grill, Willow Glen Coffee Roasting Company and Round Table Pizza, as well as some other locations in and around the Avenue.
Collins says the city is preparing to do another sweep of Lincoln before moving on to other areas of Willow Glen. For more information about bike racks, or to make a suggestion about possible locations, call Jo-Ann Collins at 277-5345.
