WGBPA ballot not yet filled
President says no one wants to spend time working with group
By Kate Carter
With just days left before the Willow Glen Business and Professional Association's Feb. 21 election of new board members, the nominating committee was still trying to round up candidates willing to be on the ballot.
"We need to sit down and finalize that," President Bob Waligore said last week. "There isn't a whole lot of enthusiasm out there."
The association sent out nominating forms to all its members earlier this month, hoping for enough interest in the seven elected positions to allow the old members to step down. Instead, Waligore said, the three vice presidents, Chris Carris, John Karamanos and Joseph Reinke, will run uncontested for the seats they now hold.
Dave Machado, a former president, is the only candidate for treasurer, Waligore said. At press time, the candidates for secretary and recorder had not been completely established.
But the real problem is that no one wants to take on the responsibilities that go with the leading the organization, Waligore said. He has refused to continue in his current position, although as a recent former president he will continue to sit on the board.
Carris said that if there is no president, it would fall to him as first vice president to fill that role. But he said the demands of some personal responsibilities could prevent him from doing the job and could even require him to leave the board altogether.
Waligore said he has spoken to many association members to encourage them to run for office. But he says most aren't interested in getting involved with the association "at any level," because they say they are too busy with their own commitments.
The seven elected members of the executive committee will choose 10 other board members and set the meeting schedule for the year when they are installed on March 1.
In related news, Laura Augusta resigned from her seat on the board last week, citing personal reasons, as well as the lack of participation by association members with its activities.
She said she would be interested in returning to the association if it developed more involvement, and new leadership and energy.
The executive board elections are scheduled for Feb. 21, at the Willow Glen Coffee Roasting Company, 1383 Lincoln Ave. Carris said the League of Women Voters will oversee the balloting.
