Candidate Yeager snags Sierra Club endorsement

During the final stretch of campaigning season, San Jose City Council District 6 candidate Ken Yeager has received the endorsement of two environmentally friendly groups.

The Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club and the Santa Clara County League of Conservation Voters have given their sole endorsements to Yeager. The organizations attribute their endorsements to Yeager's commitment to the environment, preservation of open space and Greenbelt support.

Bob Levy, SCCLCV chair, said environmentalists are excited about Yeager's candidacy. "With his understanding of the issues and his heartfelt concern for the natural environment, Ken will be a solid vote on the environment."

Progress made on portion of creek trail

The San Jose Parks Department is getting closer to receiving enough grant funding to build a bridge in the Willow Glen portion of Los Gatos Creek.

The $530,000 bridge project across Los Gatos Creek will reach over an existing trail segment off of Lonus Court to Gregory Street. The project is part of the creek segment between Lincoln and Auzerais avenues.

Joel Slavit, planner II for San Jose Parks Planning Division, said the department recently received word the project is up for two state grants. The grants include one in the amount of $100,000 from the Habitat Conservation Program. The second grant, from the Recreational Trails Program, funds $200,000 of the project.

Slavit said if all the expected funding falls into place and the department doesn't hit any snags, the portion of the project from Lonus Court to Auzerais Avenue should be open sometime in 2003.
