'A' For Effort: Presentation's Cheyenne Brown goes up for two of the seven points she scored in last Friday night's tough loss to Mitty.
Panthers in CCS playoffsBut Mitty plays in Division I, tooBy Dick Sparrer There was only one team standing between Presentation and the girls' basketball championship in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League this season. Mitty. The Panthers beat everyone but the Monarchs in the division. Presentation ended up second in Mt. Hamilton play, losing twice to Mitty--including last week's 70-47 decision. Now the league season is over, though, and the Panthers are on their way to the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs. But guess who's there, too? Mitty is the No. 1 seed in CCS Division I. But the good news is that Presentation is seeded No. 2, so the clubs couldn't meet again until the section championship game. Getting there will certainly be no easy task for the Panthers, who are in the tougher half of the CCS bracket. Presentation will take its 19-6 season record into postseason play this week when the Panthers host Watsonville (14-14) in a first round game on Feb. 25, 7 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the CCS semifinals a week later against the winner of the Milpitas (14-12)-Monta Vista (18-5) first-round game. Mitty, meanwhile, draws a first-round bye, then will face the winner of the Independence (14-11)-San Benito (15-10) first-round game. Presentation had a shot at forcing Mitty into a first-place tie in the Mt. Hamilton Division last week, but the Panthers were blasted 70-47 by the Monarchs at Mitty. Senior center Molly Shanley had a big night for Presentation. She led the club with 17 points, but it wasn't enough. Mitty outscored the Panthers in every period to roll to the win. The Monarchs were up 43-18 by intermission. Freshman Sara Werner supported with eight points for the Panthers, and Megan Moniz and Cheyenne Brown added seven apiece. Jessica Borello, Rosanna Moreno, Jaleh Donaldson and Caitlyn Foley had two each for Presentation. The Panthers had opened the week by pounding Santa Teresa 76-25 to set up the championship game later in the week. Shanley had a three-pointer among her eight field goals to finish with 17 points in the win. Moreno supported with 12 points, and Werner joined the two in double digits with 10. Donaldson tossed in a three on her way to nine points, and Moniz canned seven points. Brown and Rebecca Cadman finished with six apiece, Borello had three and Stacey Bolaris, Jessica Maynes and Cassie Bienemann hit two each. The Panthers were as tough on Santa Teresa as Mitty would be to them later in the week. Presentation topped the Saints in every period, and led by 38-10 at the half. Mustangs advance The Pioneer girls' basketball won a pair of games last week to clinch a berth in the CCS Division III playoffs. The Mustangs finished second in the West Valley Division of the BVAL and visited Gunderson on Feb. 24, 7 p.m., for a first round game. Diana Johnson buried 17 points, and Amy Thornill added eight to lead the Mustangs to a 39-29 win over Silver Creek to open the week. Audra Sexauer tossed in six points in the win. The Mustangs wrapped up division play with an 11-3 record after an easy 46-23 win over Overfelt to close out the week. Anabel Knenanseho had the hot hand for the Mustangs, pitching in 14 points. Thornhill joined her in double figures with 12 points. Karen Garcia added eight points, and Johnson had six.
