    2002 Camp Faire

    More than 50 camps will be represented at the 2002 Summer Camp Faire Feb. 28, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at the Harker School campus, located at 4300 Bucknall Road, on the corner of Bucknall and San Tomas Aquino roads.

    This annual event, endorsed by the American Camping Association and sponsored by The Harker School, is open to all Bay Area families wishing to get information regarding local, statewide and out-of-area summer program opportunities for their children and teens. Representatives from more than 50 camps will have booths and information regarding their camps and will be on hand to answer questions. Crafts, sing-alongs and a real campfire will be offered for the enjoyment of the children in attendance.

    SharkByte Auction

    The San Jose Downtown Association will be sponsoring a SharkByte Art Charity auction March 2 at 7 p.m. at the McEnery Convention Center ballroom. Proceeds from the sale of each shark will benefit nonprofit organizations and local arts programs, including schools, charities and community support agencies. Ticket-holders will tour the shark sculptures from San Jose's largest outdoor art exhibit. The display will be the only occasion to view the SharkByte collection in a single setting.

    More than 420 tickets have been sold for the event, which was rescheduled from November 2001. Tickets are available for $50 in advance and at the door. All tickets include a champagne and dessert buffet, an auction paddle and a commemorative program. Live bidding will begin at 8 p.m. To purchase tickets, call 408.817.5696 or log onto www.SharkByteArt.com. Proxy bids are also available on the event website for those who can't attend the auction. Proxy bids must be received by March 1.

    United Way Silicon Valley appoints CEO

    United Way Silicon Valley has announced that SBC Pacific Bell Executive Mark Walker has been appointed as its CEO and president effective March 11.

    Walker, who is SBC Pacific Bell's external affairs general manager in San Jose, says, "This is a wonderful opportunity to build community, and people who know me know that is my life's work.

    "I'm honored to be chosen to lead this United Way. It is only through United Way that a community raises money and works with strong agencies to deliver health and human services to those most in need."

    Walker joined SBC Pacific Bell in San Jose in 1997. He has served as chairman of the San Jose/Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce, board member and vice chair of the Silicon Valley Workforce Investment Network, and as a former board member and secretary of Junior Achievement of Santa Clara County.

    Lincoln High hosts five-school exhibit

    San Jose Unified School District's Abraham Lincoln High School will be hosting a five-school art exhibit titled K-12: An Urban Experience. The exhibit will showcase student artwork from Trace Elementary School, Cory Elementary School, Hoover Middle School, Castillero Middle School and Lincoln High School. The show will be Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in Lincoln's main gymnasium. The all-day event will feature hundreds of drawings and paintings from the academic, visual and performing arts magnet schools.

    Throughout the day a DJ will provide the "urban sound of music," and a reception for the artists will begin at 12:30. Supplies will be on hand for those who would like to create their own urban masterpieces.
