Siehl tosses Rams to softball win over Andrew Hill
By Dick Sparrer
It was her first varsity softball game... check that, make it her first high school softball game... and Rachel Siehl made the most of her debut.
The Willow Glen freshman tossed a three-hitter to lead the Rams to a 13-3 non-league win over Andrew Hill to open the 2002 girls softball season.
Siehl struck out 11 and walked just two while scattering the three hits in the win.
"The big thing for us was the pitching of Rachel," said second-year Willow Glen coach Brian McGarry. "That was a good game for her."
Siehl also chipped in with a pair of singles to help lead the Rams offensively.
Angie Keeth and Nicole Garcia each singled and doubled in the win. Christina Gonzalez ripped a double and Marina Mendez roped a triple.
But it was a third-inning single by Serina Anaya that proved the big hit of the game. The Rams entered the top of the third trailing the Falcons 1-0 before Anaya's bases-loaded single drove in three runs to spark a six-run rally.
Hill came back with single runs in the third and fourth, but Willow Glen unloaded for five more runs in the fifth. The Rams picked up two in the top of the sixth and they nailed down the win on the 10-run rule when Siehl blanked the Falcons in the home half of the sixth.
The Rams, who played in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, will continue non-league play this week when they visit Logan on Feb. 27, 3:30 p.m., in Union City and host Overfelt on March 1, 3:30 p.m.
