Jaramillo finishes fourth at CCS
By Dick Sparrer
Willow Glen senior Mike Jaramillo wrapped up the year with an impressive fourth-place finish at the Central Coast Section wrestling finals held last weekend at Independence.
Jaramillo rolled up a solid 5-2 record at the two-day CCS tournament, fighting back for five straight wins after losing 6-5 to Jeff Covarrubias of King City. It was a courageous effort for Jaramillo, who suffered a painful muscle tear in his chest early in that first match.
Jaramillo battled for a 12-4 win over Jon Gilbert of St. Francis, then won by injury default over Mitch Thomas of Lincoln. The Willow Glen senior edged Fremont sensation Bayardo Sanchez 11-9, then beat Ted Caselli of Wilcox 6-3 to set up a rematch with Covarrubias.
This time around, Jaramillo dominated Covarrubias for an 8-3 victory to move into the third-place match.
But Jaramillo dropped a tough 7-4 decision to Nate Rey of Half Moon Bay to settle for fourth, just short of a state-qualifying position. Only the top three finishers in CCS finals advance to the CCS Championship.
"Mike showed some guts," said Willow Glen coach Phil Luna. "I was proud of the way he faced adversity and worked through it."
"He wrestled tough," added Luna, "and he earned a lot of respect from the other coaches there."
Jaramillo topped a list of eight Rams who qualified for the CCS tournament. Sam Olivas (112), Reuben Rodriguez (125), Steve Lopez (145), Daniel Cousino (152), Richard Salaz (160), Adrian Morales (171) and Amir Faraj-Perry (215) also competed at the section tourney.
Juniors Lopez and Faraj-Perry each posted 2-2 records in the tournament and Olivas, a sophomore, also won a match.
Lopez opened with a 6-0 win over Alex Olson of Riordan before losing a tough 6-4 nod to Bellarmine's Nick Crane. Lopez came back with a 9-4 win over Raymond Nunez of San Jose, but was eliminated when he was pinned by Sam Temko of Half Moon Bay.
Faraj-Perry got off to a great start with back-to-back wins at 215 pounds. He pinned David Snyder of Palo Alto with 47 seconds left to wrestle in his first match, then beat up Dustin Garcia of St. Francis 14-5. But Faraj-Perry lost 7-1 to Adam Beltran of North Monterey County, then was eliminated when he was pinned by John Readler of Bellarmine.
"It was a good experience [for Lopez and Faraj-Perry] to get to the second day," said Luna.
Olivas opened with a 6-4 win over Chris Taylor of Palo Alto, but he was pinned by Jordan Felix of Hillsdale and lost 8-0 to Adam Ruiz of Gilroy.
Willow Glen finished 34th in the team standings, the best finish in Luna's six years at the school.
