    But Presentation soccer team falls

    By Dick Sparrer

Sara Werner and Katie Passalacqua may be just sophomores at Presentation High School. But don't look for the two on the school's junior varsity basketball roster, because you won't find them there... they've spent the year on the floor for the Presentation varsity.

The two have been top scorers for the Panthers all season long, and it was no different last week in the first week of the Central Coast Section Division III playoffs.

Werner and Passalacqua combined for 71 points in two games to lead the Panthers to back-to-back wins and into the CCS semifinals this week against powerful Gunn.

Presentation, the No. 7 seed in the division, opened the postseason with a 69-55 win over Notre Dame-San Jose, then came back to beat Alvarez of Salinas 60-57 to advance to the CCS semi's.

The Panthers, now 14-14 for the year, challenge No. 3 seed Gunn on March 3, 6 p.m., at Capuchino in San Bruno.

Aragon faces the No. 1 seed, Notre Dame-Belmont, at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Capuchino in the other semifinal game. The two winners will collide on March 6, 4 p.m., in the CCS Division III championship game at the San Jose State University Events Center.

Werner poured in 25 points and Passalacqua buried 12 to lead the Panthers to the tight quarterfinal win over Alvarez.

Werner nailed nine field goals and added seven points at the free-throw line on her way to a 25-point night. Passalacqua had a pair of charity throws to go with her five buckets from the field.

Senior Cheyenne Brown and Katie Swift each supported with seven points in the win, Jessica Maynes added four and Stephanie Cadman hit a three-pointer.

Earlier in the week, Passalacqua bombed 24 points to lead the Panthers to the 14-point win over Notre Dame. Brown supported with 14 points, including three three-pointers, and Werner joined the two in double digits with 10 points. Cadman added seven points in the win, and Katherine McLaughlin hit six. Maynes and Swift had four apiece.

    Young Rams fall

The Willow Glen girls made it to the CCS Division II playoffs, but lost 58-39 to Wilcox in the first round.

Juniors Kelly McCloskey and Marcella Prada were top scorers for the Rams in the playoff game. McCloskey tossed in 12 points to lead WG, and Prada buried 11 points, including a three-pointer.

Christine Ha added five points, including a three, and Mary Bennett had four. Angel Ocampo pitched in a three, and Melissa Allen and Shannon Donovan had two points each.

It was a lopsided second period that proved the difference in the game for the Rams.

Willow Glen trailed just 15-10 at the first buzzer, but the Chargers topped the Rams by 10 in the second period, 12-2, to take a 15-point lead in at intermission, 27-12. The Rams were never able to make up the difference.

Willow Glen wrapped up the season with a 10-14 record, but Rams coach Hardy Reyerson has plenty of reasons to be pleased about his club's 1998-99 season.

First of all, the Rams rebounded from a dismal showing in the 1997-98 campaign to post a solid 9-5 record in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League this winter. And Willow Glen loses only two seniors from this squad, Sandra Corpus and LaTesha Trumbo.

McCloskey and Prada top a solid cast of juniors who will be back next season, including Ocampo, Donovan, Brigitte Boney and Mary Bennett. There were also two sophomores--Ha and Melissa Allen--and two freshmen--Courtney Livak and Andrea Royas--on the squad.

    Panthers lose

The Presentation girls soccer team, meanwhile, lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to Mitty in the CCS Division II soccer finals.

The Panthers, 17-3-3, had opened the week with a tight 1-0 win over St. Ignatius in the semifinals. Passes from Julie Stamps and Alison Berthold set up Rachel Field for the game-winning goal late in the second half.

The win pushed the Panthers into the CCS title game for the eighth straight year, but a second-half goal by Mitty ended Presentation's hopes for a championship repeat.

The clubs had tied 2-2 and 1-1 in their previous meetings this season, and Mitty had won the title in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL, finishing a notch ahead of the Panthers.
