Silicon Valley leaders discuss energy needs
South Bay officials and local leaders will tackle power problems at a Silicon Valley energy summit planned for this week.
Mayor Ron Gonzales proposed the summit at his State of the City address last month. He will co-chair the daylong event with county board of supervisors Chair Jim Beall and Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group board Chair James Woody.
Mayoral spokesman David Vossbrink said mayors from other cities in Santa Clara County, as well as state and federal legislators have been invited to attend. They, along with business and community leaders, were asked to come with specific ideas for reducing energy use and increasing energy production in the region.
Gonzales has already proposed expanding existing conservation programs and building small power production facilities in nonresidential areas.
The summit will take place on March 16, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. The meeting is open to the public.

Permit approved for senior housing
A new development proposed for senior citizens in Willow Glen moved closed to reality last week.
The city's planning director approved the planned development permit for a complex of 66 attached affordable housing units at 1735 Almaden Road. The approximately 1.25-acre site is located south of Willow Glen Way.
The developer is Community Housing Partners.
Senior Planner Carol Hamilton said this project is one of many senior housing developments going into Willow Glen to meet the growing need for safe and affordable places for seniors on fixed incomes. She said city officials want to spread more senior housing throughout San Jose to keep families closer together, and to keep seniors connected to the community.
