Dismal week for Presentation
Panthers fall in basketball, soccer
By Dick Sparrer
It was a dismal week around Presentation High School, and not just because of the gloomy, rainy weather that hit the Santa Clara Valley.
No, the week was dismal for the Panthers because they saw two teams come up short in races for Central Coast Section championships.
The Presentation girls soccer team lost a 3-0 decision to Mitty in the CCS Division II soccer tournament, and the Panthers lost 52-32 to powerful Sacred Heart Cathedral in the semifinals of the CCS Division III basketball tourney.
The hoop season came to an end a game short of the CCS finals for the Panthers, who lost to Sacred Heart by 20. The Irish went on to win the section championship last weekend.
Katie Passalacqua fired in 11 points and Sara Werner tossed in nine, but the Panthers were never really close in the CCS playoff game.
The Irish went up 15-6 in the first period and stretched that lead to 14 by intermission, 24-10. Sacred Heart outscored Presentation 16-7 in the third to take command of the game.
Katherine McLaughlin supported with five points for the Panthers. Caitlyn Foley added three points and Liz Cirone and Erin Swift hit two apiece.
Presentation finished the year with a 14-14 record.
The Panthers had opened the playoffs with a 63-37 victory over Mercy of San Francisco, then beat Los Gatos 51-42 to move into the semifinals against Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Panthers fall
The Presentation girls soccer team also lost last week, falling 3-0 to Mitty in the CCS Division II finals.
The clubs fought to a scoreless tie in the first half, but the Monarchs filled the Presentation net with three goals in the second half to clinch the win.
The nationally-ranked Monarchs finished the year with an impressive 20-1-2 record. Presentation ended up 16-3-5.
The Panthers opened the playoffs with a pair of close wins. Presentation and Notre Dame-Belmont fought to a 1-1 tie through four overtimes before the Panthers pulled out a 2-1 win on penalty kicks, and a game later the Panthers beat Carlmont 2-1 in overtime. Goals by Selina Ching and Jaime Moore and assists from Rachel Field and Kelly Sweitzer helped the Panthers to the win.
That victory over the Scots would prove to be the final win for longtime Presentation coach Mani Hernandez, who led the Panthers to greatness for over two decades.
Rams are all-league
Sophomore sweeper Saul Villatoro was named the most valuable player in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League after leading the Willow Glen boys soccer team to the division championship.
Senior stopper Rudy Ochoa was picked as the senior of the year on the all-league team, and head coach Sue Parisi was named the coach of the year.
Winning all-league first team honors for the Rams were seniors Hugo Sigala and Juan Rivera, junior Christian Jimenez and sophomore Osvaldo Gonzales.
Claiming spots on the all-league second team were senior Ramon Duran, juniors Oscar Garcia and Manolo Rosales and sophomore Dustin Cohen.
The Rams won the division title and made it all the way to the CCS Division I semifinals before losing 2-1 to Bellarmine.
