Lincoln makes the grade in 'Newsweek'
Abraham Lincoln High School was named one of the best high schools in Newsweek magazine's annual "The Best High Schools List" in the United States, March 6 edition.
The list was released early last week, ranking Lincoln at 236 out of 472 schools. According to Newsweek, the rankings are calculated on the ratio between the number of advanced placement tests taken and the number of graduating seniors in 1999.
Lincoln High School principal Oreen Gernreich said it's a very prestigious award for her teachers and was a nice surprise on a Monday morning.
Gernreich said administration on her campus allows for open enrollment in AP classes and encourages students to enroll in the dozens of AP classes offered.
Barbara Lepiane, LHS assistant principle of guidance and testing said about 300 are enrolled in AP classes, in 12 different subjects including U.S. history, Spanish, Chemistry, Latin, English Literature, art, music theory and calculus.
Two other high schools in the San Jose Unified School District made the list including San Jose High Academy at 350 and Leland High School at 411.
