Panthers fall in first round of NorCal By Dick Sparrer
Winning is not always the most important aspect of postseason play. Sometimes, it's just the getting there that's important.
And that was certainly the case for the Presentation girls basketball team this winter.
The young Panthers made it to the Northern California Division III playoffs this year, and they should be all the better for it in the seasons to come.
Because Presentation is a young club this season, and those Panthers gained valuable postseason experience on their way to the NorCal tourney.
The Panthers played their way into the Central Coast Section championship game before losing 64-60 in overtime to Notre Dame-Belmont. Still, second place in the CCS was enough to qualify the Panthers for the NorCal tournament.
The Presentation girls lost a 51-50 heartbreaker to Del Oro in the first round of the NorCal Division III tournament.
Cheyenne Brown and Sara Werner topped all Presentation scorers with 11 points apiece. Each one popped a pair of three-pointers.
Stacey Cadman drilled three threes to finish with nine points in the game and Katherine McLaughlin hit a pair of threes on her way to eight points. Jennifer Foley added five points, including a three, Katie Passalacqua had four points and Jessica Maynes hit two.
It was a tough finish for Brown and the rest of the Presentation seniors. But sophomores Werner, McLaughlin, Passalacqua and Jenn Falbe gained valuable postseason experience that they will bring back to the floor for their next two seasons at Presentation.
The Panthers finished the year with a 15-16 season record. But, even more importantly, Paul Smith's younger players now know what it takes to "get there."
