Students can access online career info

Students from three local high schools will soon be going online to search for potential careers. A new contract approved by the San Jose Unified School District for $9,951 with Education and Career Opportunities System will help purchase an online career development site license for Willow Glen, Broadway and Lincoln high schools.

The unanimous recommendation by career center technicians within the district was ECOP Embark.com. The SJUSD approved the contract on March 16.

The program assesses the student's interest and explores 1,100 career profiles. It also allows for personalized searches of two- and four-year colleges, and trade and technical schools. Students also may contact officials from universities and gather information about scholarships and financial aid.

Orchard tour portrays a history of the valley

It's not just a myth; Santa Clara Valley was once covered with orchards and trees. To prove it, the Guadalupe River Park and Gardens is hosting a tour of three historical orchards on April 22. The bus tour begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Guadalupe River Park and Garden's Historic Orchard. The next stops are the Orchard Heritage Park Interpretive Exhibit at the Sunnyvale Community Center and the Heritage Orchard at Prusch Park. Each stop features a speaker who knows the history of the given orchard. The tour ends at the Garden Center at 12:30.

Tickets are $15, and organizers promise that the tour will go on, rain or shine. To place a reservation, send a check, payable to Guadalupe River Park and Gardens, to Guadalupe River Park and Gardens, 50 W. San Fernando St. #1100, San Jose, 95113. Refunds will be made only if there is a waiting list. For more information, contact Phil Cornish at 408.277.8845.

Art of Arthur Szyk is the program topic

Congregation Shir Hadash in Los Gatos invites the community to a program on March 25 at 7:30 p.m. titled "The Art of Arthur Szyk." The program will be presented by Rabbi Irvin Ungar, who is president of the Arthur Szyk Society and curator of the Arthur Szyk exhibit in the Library of Congress. The program details the life and works of a man many scholars consider the greatest 20th-century illuminator, who worked in the style of 16th-century miniaturist painters. Szyk was also a leading political caricaturist during World War II whom Eleanor Roosevelt once called a "one-man army against Hitler."

Admission to the program is $7.50 per person, which includes a potluck wine and cheese reception after the program. Congregation Shir Hadash is at 16555 Shannon Road. For reservations or more information, call 408.358.1751.

WVC offers Women's History Month events

In recognition of Women's History Month, the West Valley-Mission Community College District has planned a variety of workshops throughout March.

Among the remaining workshops is Women in the Developing World on March 23, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, presented by Saratogans Barby and Vic Ulmer, founders of the nonprofit organization, Our Developing World. The Ulmers will use games, simulations, myths, fables and visual materials to introduce topics of concern to women in developing countries.

Another event is Treasuring Our Past: A Luncheon and Antiques Road Show of Women's History Artifacts on March 29, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Participants will include WVC faculty, staff and students, as well as community members, who are asked to bring a favorite artifact (or photo of an artifact) and to share its history. For information about these or other Women's History Month events, call 408.741.2652 or 408.741.2195, or visit www.wvmccd.cc.ca.us on the Internet.

Census forms arrive in mail this month

Households should receive their Census 2000 forms by the end of March, and will have until April 11 to mail them back. Nonresponding households will be contacted directly by a census taker up through July 7.

Completing the forms is important. Census data determines how federal and state money is allocated to local communities. The census provides decision-makers with information to better understand what areas need new roads, schools or hospitals.
