The Rams are off and running.
Both the Willow Glen boys and girls track teams opened the league season with victories last week, each one beating James Lick in the first meet of the year in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
Seth Andrews won a pair of events, and Leo Garcia and Eyasu Kebede each ran to victories to lead the Willow Glen boys past the Comets 69-58.
Andrews, a powerful 5-foot-10 and 235-pound junior, powered the shot put 41-4 and heaved the discus 109-4 for a couple of Willow Glen firsts.
Garcia covered 800 meters in 2:10.0 for a Willow Glen victory, and Kebeda ran 4:52.2 for a first-place finish in the 1600 meters for the Rams.
Willow Glen also won the 4x400 relay.
The girls, meanwhile, romped to a 72-46 victory over Lick behind three wins by Janette Najera.
The Willow Glen senior romped to a victory in the 800 meters in 2:40.3, the 1600 in 5:54.0 and the 3200 in 13:14.
Shannon Donovan supported with a first-place finish in the 100 hurdles in 20.15, and Stacey Yabes was a double winner in the weights, taking the shot put at 24-4 and the discus at 87-8.
Panthers win
The Presentation girls softball team cruised to four victories last week, two of them in the Miguel Tournament hosted by Pioneer.
Sara Wiedlin tossed a five-inning no-hitter to lift the Panthers to a tourney-opening 5-0 win over Valley Christian. Wiedlin fanned 10 and walked just two in the game.
Kari White-Burke doubled home a pair of runs in a five-run fourth to lead the Panthers to the win. Alyssa Messier and Stacey Burcina each doubled.
Shannon Linerud flipped a two-hitter in a 3-1 win over Santa Clara a game later. Linerud struck out 11.
Jessica Maynes had two hits for the Panthers and Burke tripled.
Willow Glen lost 5-3 to Milpitas in its tournament opener.
The Panthers, now 9-3 for the year, had pounded Los Altos 13-1 on a one-hitter by Messier and whipped Burlingame 7-0 earlier in the week.
Good News, Bad News
It was a regular good news, bad news week for the Willow Glen boys tennis team.
The Rams found themselves on both ends of a 7-0 decision, losing to Mt. Pleasant in nonleague play before beating Independence in a Santa Teresa Division match.
Jonathan Hunter breezed to a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles to start the Rams on the road to the easy win over Independence in the league match last week.
Vince Butera followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2, David Yazdani won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3, and Nick Perez won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4.
In doubles play, senior Will Burns and freshman Jose Ocampo teamed for a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 1, Loc Nguyen, and Alex Nguyen won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, and Mike Nguyen and Nick Burggraff won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.
The Rams, now 2-1 in the division and 3-6 for the year, will visit Piedmont Hills on March 23 and host Oak Grove on March 25 in a pair of 3:15 p.m. league matches this week.
Volleyball Wins
The Willow Glen boys volleyball team cruised to a pair of Santa Teresa Division wins last week, edging Lincoln 16-14, 15-11, 10-15, 6-15, 15-13 and beating Gunderson 15-2, 17-15, 15-6. The Rams are now 2-0 in the division and 2-1 for the year.
Swimmers drop two
The Willow Glen girls and boys swimming teams both lost to Piedmont Hills in Santa Teresa Division competition last week. The WG girls dropped a tough 92-81 nod to the Pirates, and the boys were swamped 119-31.
The Livak sisters, junior Kristan and freshman Courtney, each sprinted to individual victories for the Willow Glen girls.
K. Livak was first in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:08.51, and C. Livak took the 100 breaststroke in 1:26.0.
The two teamed with Allison Woodside and Kara Buchanan for a win in the 200 medley relay in 2:16.84, and K. Livak joined forces with Woodside, Alicia Barreto and Becca Edwards for a win in the 200 free relay in 2:15.97.
The Willow Glen boys had no winners against Piedmont.
Rams top Chargers
Sean Durkin and Matt Staton fired solid rounds the Almaden Country Club to help the Willow Glen golf team beat Leland on its own home turf last week.
Durkin carded a three-over par 39 and Staton was close behind with a 40 to lead the Rams to an impressive 207-210 win over the Chargers.
Earlier in the week, Staton had fired a three-over par 38 at Riverside, but the Rams lost a tough 200-206 not to Leland.
Willow Glen is now 2-1 in the Mt. Hamilton Division.
Rams lose
The Willow Glen baseball team dropped a lopsided 10-0 decision to Gunderson last week to slip to 0-2 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL and to 1-5 for the year. The Rams could manage just three hits in the shutout.
