Different look on the courts at WG

Ocampo, Vuu are lone returners for Rams

    By Dick Sparrer

Jose Ocampo is back. So is Tri Vuu. But otherwise, things look dramatically different this spring on the tennis courts at Willow Glen High School.

Longtime head coach Don DuShane has retired from his post after heading up the boys team for 13 seasons, and Willow Glen teacher Ryan MacDonald has taken over the program.

And the Rams are no longer in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, but instead have moved to the West Valley Division despite their second-place finish of a year ago. With only two players returning, DuShane lobbied to drop the team to the lower division so that the Rams could remain competitive.

Ocampo, a senior who played in the No. 1 singles spot on last year's Santa Teresa Division runner-up team, returns to lead to the charge for the Rams again this spring. Vuu played third doubles last year but has moved into the singles ladder this season and is playing No. 4.

A talented newcomer to the Willow Glen program is sophomore William Wang, who had locked down the No. 2 singles post for the Rams.

Willow Glen lost two matches last week to slip to 2-4 in West Valley Division play. The Rams lost 5-2 to Westmont before falling 6-1 to unbeaten Independence.

Wang posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles for one of Willow Glen's two wins against the Warriors to finish the week.

Earlier, Wang won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles for WG's only victory against the 76ers.

The Rams opened league play with a 6-1 loss to Lincoln despite a 6-2, 6-0 win by Ocampo at No. 1 singles.

Willow Glen beat James Lick and San Jose, but dropped a 6-1 nod to Silver Creek. Wang posted a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.

Willow Glen will gun for a pair of wins this week. The Rams visited Gunderson on March 26 and will host Lincoln on March 28 for a pair of 3:15 p.m. matches.

    Baseball

The Willow Glen baseball team dropped a pair of Mt. Hamilton Division decisions last week, falling 11-1 to Valley Christian and 11-0 to Leland.

The two losses leave the Rams 0-6 in the division and 3-9 for the season. Willow Glen will try to get its first league win this week when the Rams host Oak Grove on March 28, 3:30 p.m.

Sophomore John Gibilisco singled and doubled to lead the five-hit attack for the Rams in the 11-1 loss to Valley Christian last week.

The Rams were no-hit by Leland earlier in the week in a 11-0 loss in five innings.

    Softball

Janelle Calderon and Rachel Siehl combined for a 6-hitter to lead the Willow Glen girls softball team to a 6-2 win over Del Mar last week in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.

Calderon picked up the win, pushing her pitching record to 3-2, and Siehl came on in relief to get the save for the Rams. Mikka Dixon knocked in two runs to lead the offensive attack.

The Rams dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Mt. Pleasant in their only other game of the week. Siehl tossed a 3-hitter, but the single run she allowed in the third turned out to be the difference in the game.

Over in the Mt. Hamilton Division, Presentation lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Westmont last week to slip to 1-1 in league play.

The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run triple by Nicole Roussere, but the Warriors picked up a run in the third, then scored two in the seventh to win it.

Shannon Linerud singled and tripled for the Panthers and Priscilla Soria singled and doubled.

Freshman Mikaela Gillette was stung with the tough pitching loss, despite whirling a gem for the Panthers. Her record is even at 1-1.

Presentation will try to return to its winning ways with a couple of 3:30 p.m. home games this week. The Panthers hosted Santa Teresa on March 26 and will host Leigh on March 28.

    Volleyball

Senior outside hitter Mark Sarinana hammered down five kills, but the Willow Glen boys volleyball team dropped a 15-5, 15-12, 15-3 decision to Valley Christian last week in Mt. Hamilton Division play.

The Rams, 2-1 in the division and 5-2 for the year, headed to Oak Grove on March 26 for a 6 p.m. match.

    Track and Field

Ngoan Phan romped to wins in the mile and 2-mile and Gilbert Lozoya was a double winner in the sprints to lead the Willow Glen boys track and field team to a 93-33 win over Andrew Hill last week.

The win helped the Rams improve to 3-0 in the West Valley Division of the BVAL.

Phan won the mile in 4:52 and took the 2-mile in 10:51. Lozoya was first in the 100 in 11.7 and won the 200 in 25.1. He also helped the Rams to a win in the 4x100 relay in 47.7.

Sophomore Janelle Zetterquist won three events to lead the Willow Glen girls to a 97-30 win over Hill. The Rams improved to 2-0 in the division with the victory.

Zetterquist took the mile in 5:50.3, the 2-mile in 12:54 and the 880 in 2:46.

Over in the Mt. Hamilton Division, Presentation rolled to a 101-33 victory over Overfelt. The Panthers are now off to a 2-1 start in the division.

Mandy Williams won three events to lead the Panthers past the Royals. Williams took the 800 in 2:27.3, the mile in 5:31.01 and the 2-mile in 12:17.50.
