Panthers, Rams win in softball tourney play

    By Dick Sparrer

Shannon Linerud and Sara Wiedlin tossed the Presentation girls softball team into the finals of the Circle of Champions tournament last weekend, but the Panthers dropped the title game to North Monterey County 4-3 in an eight-inning heartbreaker.

Wiedlin fired a one-hitter in the semifinals, and Linerud flipped a seven-hitter in the quarterfinals to lead the Panthers into the title game. But Linerud was tagged with the tough loss in the finals when she allowed single runs in the seventh and eighth.

The Panthers opened up a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two in the fourth, but NMC chipped away with single runs in the fourth and fifth, then tied it with a run in the bottom of the seventh. The home team scored again in the eighth to pull out the win.

Linerud and Stephanie Arde slapped two hits apiece to lead a seven-hit attack for Presentation. Linerud was stuck with the loss despite tossing a six-hitter.

The Panthers, now 9-6 for the year, had beaten Capuchino 3-1 on a one-hitter by Wiedlin in the semi's. Wiedlin struck out nine as she ran her pitching record to 4-2 with the victory.

Arde led the Panthers at the plate with a single and double.

Linerud went the distance, striking out 10, to lead the Panthers to a 2-1 win over St. Francis in the quarterfinals.

Wiedlin had nailed a win with a one-hit shutout in Presentation's 2-0 win over Carlmont in pool play. Wiedline fanned eight in the win.

The second-place effort in the tournament came after the Panthers lost two games in the Mount Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League earlier in the week.

Wiedlin struck out 11, but the Panthers lost 2-0 to Westmont, and Linerud fired a five-hitter, but Presentation fell 3-0 to Mitty. Adrian St. Cin doubled in the loss.

Willow Glen also lost twice in league play last week, losing 7-1 to Mount Pleasant and 5-4 to Gunderson. The Rams are 0-3 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL and 5-6 for the year.

Kelly McCloskey doubled and tripled for the Rams in the loss to the Grizzlies and Maria Gonzales and Melissa Reyes each doubled.

Janelle Calderon had been named to the all-tournament team for the Rams when they competed in the Charlie Miguel Tournament the week before.

Calderon tossed a four-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Homestead. McCloskey drove in the Rams' only run and Desiree Dagnino doubled and singled twice.

Jenny Silva singled and doubled to drive in two runs and Angie Keeth had two hits in an 8-4 win over Menlo. Angel Ocampo tripled and Calderon went the distance to toss a three-hitter.

The Rams lost 6-1 to Piedmont Hills in the consolation round.
