A bonding report
As a bond oversight representative for area 3 of San Jose Unified Schools, I feel we need to give the voters and parents a quarterly update regarding the bond work.
At this time the most exciting news to share is that since the State School Bond passed in November of 1998, we will be receiving more than previously expected. San Jose Unified was expecting $27 million in matching funds from the state; now we could receive up to $70 million.
Now for the update on the local schools. Booksin and Schallenberger are the only schools within area 3 that have bond work currently in progress. Some schools have wok going on that is not bond related (more on that later.) At this time, work is scheduled to begin June 11, 1999 at Willow Glen Middle School. Both the middle and high schools are two of the biggest bond projects within San Jose Unified. The middle school renovation is expected to be completed by September 2000. The high school will start in June 2000 and run until September 2001. The middle school kids will be housed in 11 new permanent portables that are Internet updated and have air conditioning. These portables will be placed on the grassy knoll at he middles school campus.
The middle school students will rotate using these portables during construction of the different wings. When the high school construction starts, the middle school students will move permanently into the new portables and the high school students that are displaced will rotate into the classrooms in the B & C wings on the middle school campus. When the high school construction is completed, the plan is to tear down the B & C wings and build a quad for the middle schools students.
I have been very critical of the district in the past, but I am pleased with the way they are handling the bond work. District employees Rod Sprecher, Ron Edwards and John and Carl Cimino have come up with very creative ways to save money so that more dollars can go into fixing the things that need to be fixed at our schools.
Some of the other work going on is the lighting retrofitting and swimming pool remodeling. Although this is not bond related, it is an idea that came from the schools being reviewed for bond construction. These upgrades are being paid for through money saved on energy conservation. Yes, the Willow Glen Middle School swimming pool will be done and open this summer.
If you have questions you can call me at 559-4444 or e-mail Will@amerimac.com or talk to Kris Cunningham, Marilyn Dion or Linda Herschbach your other bond representatives for Area 3.
