    SJUSD needs Measure F bond volunteers

    The San Jose Unified School District board of education is asking for volunteers to participate on a citizen's oversight committee for its recently passed $429 million school bond, Measure F.

    The committee will inform the public about how the bond money is spent and is expected to meet quarterly.

    San Jose celebrates Cesar Chavez Day

    San Jose city offices closed April 1 in honor of labor worker Cesar Chavez's March 31 birthday. The city hosted several events that day and later to celebrate his life and work.

    The city held a commemorative breakfast April 1 at 8 a.m. at the Mexican Heritage Plaza, 1700 Alum Rock Ave. Mayor Ron Gonzales, Vice Mayor George Shirakawa and Councilwomen Cindy Chavez and Nora Campos attended.

    The Mexican Heritage Corporation and the Cesar E. Chavez family also hosted a free film screening of Common Man , Uncommon Vision: The Cesar E. Chavez Story and a conversation with his brothers and sisters. For more information, call 408.928.5564.

    An April 6 march to celebrate Chavez's birthday will begin at 9 a.m. at Roosevelt Park on E. Santa Clara and 19th streets and end at Plaza de Cesar Chavez, to be followed by a daylong festival at the plaza, with dancing, food and entertainment by local bands, mariachis and folklorico.     NAACP to hold 50th banquet

    The San Jose/Silicon Valley NAACP will hold its 50th annual Freedom and Friendship Banquet April 13 from 6 to 11:30 p.m. at Lou's Village restaurant, 1465 W. San Carlos St.

    The program, which includes keynote speaker Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and honorees Rep. Mike Honda, Assemblyman John Vasconcellos and the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, among others, will begin at 7 p.m.

    Summer camp directory available

    A free 2002 directory of Northern California summer camps accredited by the American Camping Association is now available online, www.acacamps.org, or by calling 800.362.2236.

    The association is the only U.S. organization to verify that all types of camps comply with up to 300 health and safety and program-quality standards.

    Tax assistants help low-income earners

    Tax-aide volunteers from San Jose's Retired and Senior Volunteer Program will help lower-income residents file their tax returns at 17 San Jose locations from Feb. 1 through April 15.

    The RSVP volunteers will also be joined by students from San José City College's Accounting Department. The service is provided in 10 languages, and electronic filing is available at two locations.
