There was only one game last week for the Willow Glen baseball team, but the Rams made the most of it.
Willow Glen, previously winless in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, came back after a Tuesday bye to beat Oak Grove 14-4.
It was a great breakout win for the Rams, who won in five innings on the 10-run rule.
The game didn't start out that well for the Rams, who gave up a run in the first to the Eagles. Willow Glen rallied for three in the second to take a 3-1 lead, but Oak Grove answered with three in the top of the third to go up 4-3.
That's when things really turned around for the Rams. Willow Glen scored three in the third, three more in the fourth and five in the fifth to blow out the Eagles.
Junior right hander Doug Dionne blanked the Eagles over the final two innings to claim the mound win. Dionne pushed his pitching record to 1-2 with the victory.
Sophomore catcher Justin Jeffrey ripped a three-run triple to lead the Rams offensively. Dionne and junior Thomas Ochoa each doubled.
The win left the Rams 1-6 in the division and 4-8 for the year.
Willow Glen is currently out of school for spring break, but the Rams, who were to visit Carmel on Monday, will head to Los Altos for a non-league game on April 3, 12:45 p.m.
The Rams return to Mt. Hamilton Division play on April 9 when they travel to Westmont for a 3:30 p.m. game.
Golfers 8-0
Junior Will Howsman earned medalist honors in back-to-back matches to lead the unbeaten Willow Glen golf team to a pair of wins in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL last week.
Howsman carded a two-over par 36 to pace the Rams to a 206-294 win over the Warriors at the Spring Valley Golf Course in Milpitas. The win pushed the Rams to 8-0 in league play and to 9-0 for the year.
Earlier in the week, Howsman was five over with a 40 at the Santa Teresa Golf Course in Willow Glen's 222-319 win over Yerba Buena. Nick Barretto and Ryan Radjabi each finished with 42s, Patrick Postel shot a 43 and Scott Peltz finished at 55.
Volleyball Win
Senior Mark Sarinana hammered down 13 kills to lead the Willow Glen boys volleyball team to a 13-15, 15-7, 15-6, 15-4 win over Oak Grove last week. The win helped the Rams improve to 4-1 in the Mt. Hamilton Division and to 8-5 for the year.
Willow Glen heads to the Alisal tournament on April 6 and will return to league play on April 9, 7 p.m., at Leland.
Wang a Winner
Wlliam Wang rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, but the Willow Glen boys tennis team dropped a 5-2 nod to Lincoln last week. The Rams slipped to 2-6 in the West Valley Division.
The Rams are off this week for spring break, but will be back on the court April 9, 3:15 p.m., at home against James Lick.
Softball Losses
The girls softball team at Willow Glen lost twice last week, falling 7-3 to Valley Christian and 4-3 to Branham.
It was a five-run rally in the third inning that sparked Valley to the 7-3 win over the Rams.
Two days later, freshman hurler Rachel Siehl tossed a four-hitter, but the Rams lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to the Bruins.
Willow Glen fought back from a 3-1 deficit with two in the top of the seventh to tie Branham 3-3, but the Bruins won it with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Serina Anaya doubled to lead a four-hit attack for the Rams.
Willow Glen slipped to 2-3 in the Santa Teresa Division with the two losses.
Oval Teams Win
The Willow Glen boys and girls track and field teams each raced to West Valley Division wins over James Lick last week.
Scott Neil raced to wins in the two hurdles events and Steve Evans jumped to a couple of victories to spark the Willow Glen boys to a 70-57 win over Lick.
Neil took the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.05 and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 47.3, and Evans was tops in the high jump at 5-8 and first in the triple jump at 39-4.
Ngoan Phan rambled to a win in the 2-mile in 10:28.9, Gilbert Lozoya raced to a win in the 100 in 11.59, Amir Faraj-Perry took the shot put with a 40-1 effort and Nate Oxsen won the discus with a toss of 114-6.5.
Michelle Castaneda raced to wins in the 100 high hurdles in 17.02 and the 300 low hurdles in 53.71 to lead the Willow Glen girls to a 103-22 track win over Lick.
Edna Sison sprinted to a first in the 100 in 13.2 and also ran legs on both the 4x100 and 4x400 winning relay teams.
The Rams dominated the distance events, with Cristina Diaz taking the mile in 5:37 and Cassie Alvarado winning the 2-mile.
Crystal Salazar led the Willow Glen effort in the weight events, winning the shot put with a heave of 28-4.
Swimmers Win
Kelsey Giambruno and Katie Morrow each won two events and were each members of two winning relay teams in a Willow Glen 93-59 girls swimming win over Prospect.
Giambruno took the 200-yard individual medley in 2:50.96 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.70, and Morrow was tops in the 100 freestyle in 1:06.76 and the 100 backstroke in 1:15.53.
Giambruno and Morrow teamed with Courtney Livak and Alisson Rice for a win in the 200 medley relay in 2:10.24. The foursome also took the 200 free relay in 1:56.98.
Alicia Barreto rounded out the list of Willow Glen winners with a first in the 100 butterfly in 1:23.33.
The Willow Glen boys also swamped Prospect, winning 86-12. Double winners Kyle Goddard, Kyle Buchanan, Bryan Kane and Wes Okun keyed the win for the Rams.
Goddard was first in the 200 IM in 3:11.42 and the 100 breast in 1:15.75, Buchanan won the 100 fly in 1:07.03 and tied for first in the 50 free in 26.47, Kane took the 500 free in 6:03.57 and the 100 back in 1:30.93 and Okun was a winner in the 200 free in 2:10.60 and the 100 free in 59.35.
