Willow Glen Middle School student Diana Schnabel was recognized for her work in and out of the classroom at the 2001 Seagate Technology/Sharks Foundation Eighth-Grade Leadership Awards ceremony on March 28.

Along with other eighth-grade students from every public middle school in Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties, Schnabel was presented with a leadership plaque and tickets to the San Jose Sharks hockey game on March 29. In addition, a permanent trophy was presented to each school that did not already have one.

Schnabel said, in addition, to participating in school activities and attending San Jose Unified School District meetings, she is part of WEB, or Welcome Every Body, an orientation and mentoring program for incoming sixth-graders, and is a member of the California Junior Scholarship Federation. She is also a member of the eighth-grade girls basketball team and the choir at Willow Glen Middle. Outside of school, Schnabel is a leader-in-training at Calvary Church in Los Gatos.

Schnabel said she believes student involvement is important for schools, and said she hopes to help build a strong base for student participation at the school for her younger sister, who will eventually attend Willow Glen Middle.

The Eighth-Grade Leadership Awards honor eighth-grade students who have proven themselves to be leaders in the classroom as well as in the community.
