Santa Clara sues paint manufacturers
Santa Clara County last week filed suit against eight U.S. paint manufacturers and the Lead Industries Association. The suit contends that paint manufacturers knew of health hazards associated with lead paint as early as 1904, yet concealed that knowledge and continued to produce and promote the use of lead paint. The county will ask the courts to certify the case as a class action lawsuit, thereby potentially including all public jurisdictions in the state of California.

Circus performance benefits runaways
When Cirque du Soleil makes its annual stop in San Jose this month, it will be joined by street kids, runaways and homeless teenagers. Members of the Canadian-based circus decided to target this youth group. They will donate tickets to the Social Advocates for Youth (SAY), a 25-year-old service to at-risk youth and their families in Santa Clara County.
The circus has also donated a block of preferred seating to SAY for its 9:30 p.m. performance on April 28. All proceeds will benefit SAY.
"We feel very fortunate to benefit from Cirque du Soleil's generosity," said Beatrix Lopez, executive director of SAY. "Their concern and commitment to homeless and runaway youth is admirable."
To purchase tickets for Cirque du Soleil's SAY benefit, call 253.3540.

Trust fund has been established for firefighter's family
Willow Glen resident and San Jose firefighter Mitch Wisinski survived the March 30 plane crash that killed his older brother, 44-year-old Don Wisinski.
The two-seater private plane had just been washed by Don and his 18-year-old son, Mike, at an airport in Fresno. Once in the air, the plane malfunctioned and dove into the ground after hitting some nearby utility pole wires, said Tom Skully, San Jose fire captain and public information officer. Mike was able to escape from the plane, but went back inside to retrieve his father. Mike was transported to a hospital in Fresno where he is in critical condition, suffering from third-degree burns over 95 percent of his body.
A trust fund has been established for the Wisinski family, and cash donations are appreciated. Donations can be made to the Wisinski Trust Fund at Bank of the Sierra, 427 West Lacey Blvd., Hanford, CA., 93230.
