Fast Pitch: Willow Glen's Janelle Calderon led the Rams to a win over James Lick with her hitting and pitching last week. But Willow Glen lost to Valley Christian later in the week.

Hobbs, Durkin toss Rams to wins

Willow Glen girls win big, then lose

Bob Hobbs and Matt Durkin couldn't have asked for more support.

The two Willow Glen hurlers each posted mound victories last week for the Rams, and their teammates came through with more support than either one of them needed.

The Rams pounded out 25 hits in two games on the way to lopsided victories over James Lick and Yerba Buena in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Hobbs tossed a two-hitter and blanked Lick over six innings before getting touched for a run in the seventh, but his teammates swamped him with support in the 11-1 victory.

It was more of the same later in the week when Durkin allowed just three hits, but was an easy winner in Willow Glen's 14-5 victory.

Hobbs went the distance on Monday, striking out 12 and walking just two, to lead the Rams past the Comets. Hobbs pushed his mound record to 3-0 with the victory.

Gabe Candelaria provided Hobbs with all the offense he would need with a three-run homer in the sixth. But Willow Glen provided much more support than that.

Will Rideau doubled and singled twice to knock in two runs and Vidal Cibrian doubled home a pair of runs in the Willow Glen win. Daniel Rice added two runs and Jared Jeffrey doubled.

The Rams scored single runs in the second, third and fourth to lead 3-0, but they broke the game open with six runs in the sixth.

It was more of the same on Friday when the Rams pounded Yerba Buena 14-5.

Rice and David Macchi ripped three hits apiece to lead a 13-hit attack for the Rams. Candelaria and Josh Weaver added two hits each and Ryan Frazier belted a two-run double. Cibrian and Luis Pacheco also knocked in two runs each.

The Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and added two in the fourth. The Warriors answered with three in the home half of the fourth, but Willow Glen scored single runs in the fifth and sixth and then blasted YB for seven in the seventh.

Durkin picked up the mound win, pushing his mark to 4-0.

The Rams are now 7-0 in the West Valley Division and 7-3 for the year. They were to open the week at Lincoln on Monday, and will host Andrew Hill on April 3, 3:30 p.m., before visiting San Jose on April 5, 3:30 p.m.

    Rams split

The Willow Glen girls softball team unloaded for 17 runs last week, more than enough to win a couple of games in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.

Unfortunately, for the Rams, most of them came in a lopsided 16-3 win over James Lick to open the week, and they only had one left for Valley Christian on Friday.

Willow Glen dropped a tough 4-1 nod to the Warriors to slip to 1-5 in division play and to 6-7 for the year.

The Rams scored a run in the fifth, but they gave up two each in the first and second in the 4-1 setback.

Willow Glen had opened the week by pounding out nine hits and pushing across 16 runs in an easy win over the Comets. The Rams took a 6-3 lead into the seventh, then unloaded for nine runs.

Senior slugger Kelly McCloskey ripped three hits to knock in two runs for the Rams in the win.

Freshman Angie Keeth singled and tripled to drive in two runs and Angel Ocampo singled and doubled to knock home a pair. Janelle Calderon ripped a double and was also the winning pitcher for the Rams.

Willow Glen will try to get back on the winning track this week. The Rams will host Independence on April 5 and Pioneer on April 7 in a pair of 3:30 p.m. games.

    Panthers win two

The Presentation girls opened play last week with a 2-0 win over Leland in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL, then the Panthers handled Palo Alto 13-0 in the first round of the Wilcox Tournament.

Sara Wiedlin tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the Panthers past the Chargers. Wiedlin, who boasts a 5-2 pitching record, struck out 10 and walked just two in the game.

The Panthers scored two runs in the third to clinch the win, and it was Adrian St. Cin knocking home the eventual game-winning run. Kari Burke doubled in the win for Presentation.

The Panthers, 1-3 in the division and 11-6 for the year, opened the Wilcox Tournament with a 13-0 win over Paly. Shannon Linerud flipped a one-hit shutout for the winning, striking out 12 and walking just one. Linerud boasts a 4-2 pitching mark.

St. Cin was the hitting star for the Panthers with a home run and two singles to knock in four runs.

    Saints sink Rams

The Santa Teresa golf team two-timed Willow Glen last week, winning twice in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL.

Matt Staton carded a four over par 40 at the Santa Teresa Golf Course, but it wasn't enough for Willow Glen. The Rams lost 209-221 to the unbeaten Saints.

Staton and Vince Puthoff each fired 39s a couple of days later, but the Rams lost again to Santa Teresa 198-221.

Willow Glen slipped to 4-3 for the year with the two losses.
