Dinner will benefit Adult Care Center

The Saratoga Adult Care Center invites senior citizens and diners of all ages to attend its sixth annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser on April 6. The dinner is served at two sittings, 5 or 6:30 p.m., and includes spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic bread, salad, dessert and soda or one glass of wine. Tickets are $12 per person. The dinner takes place at the Saratoga Center, 19655 Allendale Ave, which shares the same building as the Adult Care Center. For tickets or more information, call SACC administrative director Karen Lorenz at 408.868.1262.

Tax help available for senior citizens

It's not too late to get assistance filing federal or state tax returns--free tax preparation and counseling services are available to senior citizens, as well as people with low incomes or those who are disabled. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) sponsors this program, which is available through April 11, at the Los Gatos Neighborhood Center, 208 E. Main St. Appointments are required. Call 408.354.1514 for more information.

Senior Friends welcome West Valley residents

Good Samaritan Hospital encourages all interested local senior citizens in the West Valley area to join its chapter of the National Association of Senior Friends, a nonprofit hospital-based health and wellness program open to anyone 50 and older. The seniors in Good Sam's growing group participate in activities, outings and informational programs. Some are free; others have small fees. Following is a sample of what's available.

    * Social Committee. The Senior Friends is forming a committee to plan picnics, dances, classes, trips, entertainment, lunches and other events. The committee will meet on the second Friday of every month. Call social chairperson Marilyn Woodruff at 408.377.3492 for more information.

    * Alcohol Awareness in Older Adults. On April 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Good Samaritan auditorium, Dr. Jerry Calloway from the Behavioral Health Department speaks about alcohol awareness in older adults, including how to identify and learn about possible alcohol-related problems.

    * Spring Craft & Bake Faire. Sponsored by the Employee Activity Committee, this event offers homemade treats, gifts, crafts and jewelry for sale. It takes place on April 21, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Conference Room 2/3.

    * Community Forum. On April 28, from noon to 1:30 p.m., Good Samaritan CEO Bill Piché discusses new developments at the hospital and talks about future plans. Audience questions and comments are welcome. A buffet lunch is included. Reservations are required.

    * Mature Driving Course. Together with the American Association of Retired Persons, Senior Friends offers the 55 Alive Mature Driving Course on May 13 and 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Conference Room 6. After completing the course, each participant receives a certificate good for an auto insurance discount for a period of three years. Advance registration is required.

Other activities include movies, theater performances, health screenings, cooking classes, exercise classes, day trips and several-day tours. Senior Friends membership is $15 per year. For more information about any of the above programs, call 408.559.2555.
