A resounding cheer for animal adoption

Cheers to the new "Pet of the Week" [Best Friends] column. I think it's absolutely super, and I'm sure it will help many deserving pets obtain a good home.

Greenline contributes to our housing woes

Recently, the San Jose City Council for the third time passed the UGB (Greenline), limiting future development. The property owners who have had their Fifth Amendment property rights taken from them (preventing development) have been successful twice before in having the courts stop the Greenline and have collected $250,000 in attorney expenses from the city.

During the last two years, the price of land paid for by builders has doubled from $500,000 to $1,000,000 an acre as a result of the artificial shortage of land created by the Greenline. Studies in Portland, where the Greenline was first in effect, report that the Greenline causes traffic, pollution, wastes resources and greatly accelerates housing costs.

The San Jose City Council is turning its back on our children and grandchildren who will have very little chance of ever living in San Jose. The council is also passing up the opportunity to assist the local companies building the Internet, which is raising the standard of living for everyone on the planet. It has been reported that we are now creating nine jobs for every home built.

Locally, as housing costs accelerate, an increasing number of residents cannot keep a roof over their heads without government help. Is this just the result of the Greenline or it the objective of the Greenline supporters.
