A man wanted on several felony charges has been booked into the County Jail after being shot at twice by a San Jose police officer in Willow Glen over the weekend.

The suspect, 27-year-old Gary Izzarelli, was wanted on three outstanding warrants for assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping and felony battery. He was also charged with being under the influence of narcotics and resisting arrest, according to police.

On April 2, police spotted Izzarelli at 8:45 p.m. at the bus stop on Lincoln and Coe Avenues, officer Rubens Dalaison said.

Upon seeing the officers, Izzarelli fled on foot, jumping the fence into the yard of 68 Lester Ave. Officer Raul Martinez Jr. drew his gun, asking the suspect to show his hands. When Izzarelli made a furtive motion toward his waistband, the officer fired one shot, and as Izzarelli continued reaching toward his waistband, the officer fired a second shot, hitting Izzarelli in the leg, according to police.

At the time of his arrest, Izzarelli did not have a weapon, Dalaison said.

Prior to April 2, Izzarelli had escaped arrest on several occasions, once after struggling with officers, and again after a high-speed chase beginning in San Jose and ending in San Bruno, police say.

According to police, on one occasion he was in possession of a stolen handgun.

Martinez, the involved officer, has been placed on routine administrative leave.

Izzarelli was treated for the leg injury before being booked into Santa Clara County Jail. He will be arraigned on April 7.
